According to reports, Arsenal are preparing a move for Argentina star Exequiel Palacios after Real Madrid fail to resume interest.

The River Plate midfielder has appeared set for a £20m move to the Bernabeu last summer before he picked up an injury, but the return of Zinedine Zidane as manager saw the Frenchman pull the plug on a fresh deal.

Now Argentinian radio station Radio Continental report that Arsenal have emerged as the new favourites to land the midfielder and are considering an offer of their own.

It is understood Palacios’ release clause in his River contract is at £18m and he would therefore be within the Gunners’ transfer budget even if they do not qualify for the Champions League.

Arsenal are in the market for a midfielder following the departure of Aaron Ramsey.

Palacios, who helped River Plate win the Copa Libertadores last year has been capped twice by Argentina but that tally will likely increase after making the 2019 Copa America squad.

The 20 year-old perfectly suits the creative, box-to-box midfielder mould Unai Emery wants to replace Ramsey.
