According to reports, Arsenal failed with a late attempt to sign West Brom defender Jonny Evans.

The Gunners had been linked with the defender throughout the January transfer window. After conceding three goals to Swansea on Tuesday night, many expected Arsene Wenger to splash out on the former Manchester United man.

His side did make a late swoop for the Northern Ireland international, but the clubs did not even begin negotiating a deal as the fee Arsenal were willing to pay for Evans was so much lower than West Brom’s asking price.

The Gunners have already conceded 34 goals this season and despite the exciting arrivals of Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Arsenal’s defence continues to be under scrutiny.

The north Londoners have seemingly passed up a clear opportunity to sign the three time Premier League winner after his other suitors, Manchester City, instead decided to sign Aymeric Laporte from Athletic Bilbao.
