Despite the addition of German international Shkodran Mustafi in the closing days of the summer transfer window, the powers that be at The Emirates are still monitoring a defensive target for January, and have been given high hopes of landing their man.

According to reports from The Sun, Man United defender Phil Jones is set to be ousted in January as Mourinho looks to reinvest in his back four, and Arsene Wenger and his scouts are still considering a move for the former Blackburn man.

The 24-year-old was linked with a move to The Emirates over the summer as fans and pundits alike pointed out the desperate need for additional steel in the back four.

The England international was a firm favourite under Sir Alex Ferguson, who also utilised him in a midfield role, but his popularity fell under David Moyes and Louis Van Gaal.

Liverpool are also rumoured to be considering a move for the United centre-half, as they also look to bolster their defensive ranks.
