Arsenal are closely monitoring Athletic Bilbao defender Unai Nunez ahead of the January transfer window, according to Football Insider.

The Gunners have been unconvincing at the back this season despite the arrival of David Luiz from Chelsea.

The club are suggested to be sending scouts to Spain regularly to assess the Spaniard and Unai Emery’s side plan on stepping up their efforts to sign Nunez.

In 12 La Liga appearances for the Spanish side, the 22 year-old has averaged 4.8 clearances per game – that would put him second in the list of Arsenal players for 2019/20.

Arsenal aren’t the only Premier League club interested in Nunez with Everton also thought to be admirers.

Arsenal also have new signing Kieran Tierney to enter the fray after returning to full fitness. The Scotland international has only competed in League Cup competition so far following a hernia operation.

Meanwhile, Rob Holding and Hector Bellerin are also fully fit after long layoffs.
