Arsenal legend Jens Lehman has suggested Bernd Leno has failed to impress Unai Emery in training since his move from Bayer Leverkusen this summer.

Tipped to be Arsenal’s new number 1, Leno joined the Gunners for a fee of around £20m in June.

The starting spot altered between he and Petr Cech in pre-season, but most expected the Germany ‘keeper to be the man between the sticks at home to Manchester City on opening day.

However, it was veteran Cech who was given the nod in Arsenal’s 2-0 defeat.

The 36 year-old made several saves in the game but also appeared to struggle trying to play out from the back as the Gunners were beaten 2-0 at the Emirates.

And Lehman, who was part of Arsenal’s legendary ‘Invincibles’ side, has hinted Leno must not be performing up to scratch to be second in line to Cech.

Petr Cech had a difficult game on Sunday

Speaking on Sky Sports’ The Debate, Lehman said: “I don’t know how he’s doing in training, but it tells you something if a guy who cost £20m, and has been chosen by the new manager, is not playing.

“That’s the strength of the squad, a misjudgement probably, but no-one knows because we are not there in training.

“We don’t know who the coaches like. If he tries a new player out, if not the other guy is playing. Bernd is a good ‘keeper, no doubt about that. The question is: can he show more than he did in the past? He must take more risks and continue his development. If he does that – good!

The Gunners take on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge this Saturday.

Gooners, who would you start in goal? Let us know in the comments…
