Arsenal legend Ian Wright has heaped praise on young defender Rob Holding, claiming that the former Bolton Wanderers man is better than last summer’s expensive defensive recruit Shkodran Mustafi.

Holding excelled in Sunday’s 2-0 victory over Manchester United having missed the North London derby the week before, despite impressing in the club’s victories over Manchester City in the FA Cup and Middlesbrough in the Premier League.

The Gunners’ victory over Jose Mourinho side has raised belief that Arsenal can squeeze into the top-four in the final weeks of the season, as Arsenal prepare to clash with Southampton tomorrow evening before a trip to face Stoke on Saturday.

Now, Wright has stated his belief that Holding has to remain in the starting eleven and claimed that he’s superior to World Cup winner Mustafi. Speaking to BT Sport, Arsenal’s second all-time leading scorer said:

“For me, what I’ve seen of Rob Holding in a few games, he deserves a chance. I think the composure of him, the way he plays, watching him in a massive game against Manchester City in the semi-final.”

“He can start that game but then he can’t start a game in the north London derby. He is more assured than Gabriel and I feel he is more assured for me than Mustafi if it was my opinion. I would have Holding.”

Arsenal sit seven points behind third-placed Liverpool as it stands but have two games in hand and can reduce that deficit to just one point if they secure victories against Southampton and Stoke, as the Reds clash with West Ham on Sunday.
