Former Arsenal midfielder is keen to see Aaron Ramsey pen a new deal at the club.

The midfielder has entered the final 12 months of his contract and will leave for free should he fail to sign on the dotted line.

Arsenal found themselves in a similar situation last season with both Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez – the latter forcing his way to Manchester United in January.

Ramsey, who is the Gunners’ current longest serving player, has been tipped to sign a new deal. And Merson has urged the midfielder get a move on.

“I am shocked he is still there,” Merson admitted on Sky Sports. “He should just sign now. I thought Chelsea might come in for him.

“It is a massive football club.

“He plays every week for Arsenal. He could go elsewhere and might play 15 games.”

Unai Emery replaced Arsene Wenger this summer

Boss Unai Emery subbed dropped Ramsey in Arsenal’s 3-2 defeat to Chelsea. The Spaniard has come under fire for struggling to implement his tactics so far.

Speaking after the match, Emery said: ‘It is clear the result is not good for us but the process is continuing.

‘Today, one thing in the first half is the reaction after 2-0, and also the efficiency. We had chances to more score in the first half.

‘I think we need to control the second half like we want, but we didn’t play like the first half and our chances were less.

‘We need to continue working for what we want, our process. Today we had two midfielders – one 19 and one 21 years old.

‘We need to give them the confidence to play but our way, our process, is to improve and give these chances to the young players. I think today will prepare us well for the next matches.’
