Manchester United’s bid for Raheem Sterling has been rejected by Liverpool, leaving Arsenal as the frontrunner to sign the young winger.

Sterling notched seven Premier League goals for the Reds this season, second only to captain Steven Gerrard. The striker has been vocal about his wish to play in the Champions League, an opportunity the Gunners could very well offer him now that Brendan Rodgers has made it clear he won’t sell Sterling to rival United.

Arsenal’s Champions League qualification could also attract Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain. Arsene Wenger missed out on Higuain two summers ago, but has now made a £30 million bid for Serie A’s third-highest goalscorer.

Schalke defender Benedikt Howedes has also talked about heading to England, maintaining that he does not want to stay within the Bundesliga. The World Cup winner still has two years remaining on his contract with the German club, so there’s no telling how much the move would cost Wenger.
