Arsenal are set to go head-to-head with North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur for the signature of want-away Schalke ace Leon Goretzka, The Daily Mirror reports.

22-year-old Goretzka is rapidly approaching the final 12 months of his contract with the Bundesliga side and has refused to put pen to paper on a new deal, leading the German club towards a likely sale this summer.

The player’s representatives have already started to explore potential options, with Juventus another side keen on his services, but Arsenal are eyeing a move of their own as they look to strengthen their midfield ranks in the close season.

The Gunners face a major restructure with Mesut Ozil, Alexis Sanchez and Jack Wilshere potentially moving away from the Emirates Stadium and the signature of Goretzka could help to fill the voids left by that trio.

With Schalke ninth in the Bundesliga table, the German side will find it difficult to fend off interest in their stellar youngster and Arsenal could take advantage of the situation by sealing a bargain deal worth around £20m.

However, they’ll have to fend off the interest of Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham Hotspur as the Lilywhites boss eyes a move of his own, as he seeks to continue creating a side that can push for major honours domestically.
