Arsenal must continue their search for a technical director after target Marc Overmars signed a new contract with Ajax to remain at the Amsterdam Arena.

The Gunners had appeared on course to see Overmars return to north London, but the Dutchman has decided to commit his longterm future to Ajax by penning a new five-year contract.

Club chiefs were desperate to land Arsene Wenger’s former star, who had 18 months left on his previous contract. However, following the clubs run to the Champions League quarter-final, Ajax made quick moves to offer him a bumper new deal.

The Mirror reports, Overmars has seen his basic salary doubled to £800,000-a-year, with a lucrative bonus package on top.

The 45 year-old has turned a profit of more than £220million in the transfer market during his time as the club’s director of football.

Arsenal will now need to continue their search having also been snubbed by Monchi, who swapped Roma for Sevilla last week.
