Matteo Guendouzi was omitted from the Arsenal squad for the Gunners 4-0 drubbing against Newcastle.

Guendouzi has been a regular for Arsenal this season

It was the first time the Frenchman has been dropped entirely for a Premier League match day when he has been available since he joined the Gunners in 2018.

Instead, Dani Ceballos started alongside Granit Xhaka in midfield, whilst Lucas Torreira stepped off the bench in the second half.

As reported by The Mirror, Mikel Arteta wasn’t pleased Guendouzi’s performances in training in Dubai.

There is much increased competition for places in Arsenal’s midfield, with Dani Ceballos producing a stellar performance on Sunday.

Arsenal legend Lee Dixon believes dropping Guendouzi, 20, could be a clever move by the manager, as it will lead the former Lorient midfielder to double his efforts to reclaim his place.

“What Mikel Arteta has done with Matteo Guendouzi today, leaving him out of the squad, will have shaken him up a bit and that’s what he did with Alexandre Lacazette by leaving him on the bench,” he told the BBC (via Daily Star).

“That’s what managers have to do sometimes, leave them out to keep them honest.”
