Arsenal, one of the Premier League title challengers this campaign, will be keen to see out the season with a win when they host Everton at the Emirates Stadium in this particular round of 38 encounters.

The Gunners are sure of playing in the Champions League for a successive season but they have the title chase on their hands for this one. On the other hand, the Toffees are chasing Premier League safety and they will hope to secure that on or before this final game of the season in North London.

Arsenal had a title challenge last season before falling at the final hurdle to Manchester City. After that strong performance, the Gunners experienced a flurry of activity during the summer transfer window, witnessing significant player departures and notable acquisitions. Long-time servant Granit Xhaka departed for Bayer Leverkusen in the German Bundesliga. At the same time, Folarin Balogun moved to Monaco, goalkeeper Matt Turner to Nottingham Forest, Pablo Mari to Monza in the Italian Serie A, and Rob Holding to Crystal Palace.

Several players also went out on loan, with Kieran Tierney joining Real Sociedad, Nuno Tavares to Nottingham Forest, and promising winger Marquinhos to FC Nantes. Nicolas Pépé, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, and Sambi Lonkonga left on free transfers, finding new homes at Trabzonspor, Olympique Lyon, and Luton Town, respectively.

On the recruitment front, Arsenal secured prominent signings, including Declan Rice from West Ham, Kai Havertz from London rivals Chelsea, Jurrien Timber from Ajax Amsterdam, and the current starting goalkeeper David Raya on loan from Brentford.

On the pitch, Arsenal had a fine start to the season beating Nottingham Forest 2-1 before going ahead to beat Crystal Palace 1-0 at Selhurst Park with a strong defensive display. That result was followed by a 2-2 draw with Fulham at home then a run of back-to-back wins over Manchester United and Everton before a 4-0 win in the UEFA Champions League. Upon return to the Premier League, Arsenal drew 2-2 with Spurs before another run of three consecutive Premier League wins over Brentford, Bournemouth, and champions Manchester City.

The first defeat of the season came in round 11 against Newcastle in controversial fashion. Having put that defeat behind them, the Gunners embarked on six consecutive wins in all competitions before a second loss of the season to Aston Villa. Arteta’s men ended the year with two consecutive losses against West Ham United and Fulham in the London derbies. Since then, the Gunners have been superb in 2024 dropping points only against Manchester City and Aston Villa. As of the time of writing, they sit second on the log, two points adrift of Manchester City..

On the other hand, Everton has not had the best of seasons in the Premier League once again. The Toffees have been distracted by off-field issues, suffering points deduction twice this season for breaching FFP guidelines while their inability to stick the ball in the back of the net has also contributed to their woes this campaign.

Everton acquired the services of new talents in a bid to bolster their ranks, signing Beto from Italian club side Udinese Calcio, and Chermiti from Portuguese giants Sporting CP. Arnaut Danjuma joined on loan from Villarreal while Ashley Young and Jack Harrison joined from Aston Villa and Leeds United respectively on free transfers.

The Toffees also let go of some notable names over the summer with the likes of Moise Kean leaving for Serie A giants Juventus, Nigerian midfielder Alex Iwobi joining Fulham and Demarai Gray crossing continents to join Al-Ettifaq of Saudi Arabia. Neal Maupay and Mason Holgate sealed loan moves away to Brentford and Southampton respectively while Tom Davies, Asmir Begovic, and Yerry Mina all departed for Sheffield United, QPR, and Fiorentina respectively on free transfers.

The Merseyside outfit has been plagued by both on-field and off-field challenges and they seem to be folding underneath all the issues. The Toffees suffered a points deduction earlier in the season as a penalty for breaching Financial Fair Play rules, however, their form on the pitch has done little to help their cause. They currently occupy 16th place on the PL table with 27 points from 32 games. Sean Dyche’s men have been defensively impressive at times this season but their profligacy in front of goal may eventually cost them their premier league status.

As of the time of writing, the Toffees have won just a Premier League game in 2024. The disappointing run of results started against PL champions Man City in a 2-0 defeat, after which they played out back-to-back 1-1 draws against Crystal Palace and Brighton before suffering consecutive defeats at the hands of West Ham and Man United respectively. Their first win of the year came in the 1-0 win over Burnley in that relegation six-pointer in early April.

Team news

Line-ups

Mikel Arteta has been able to call on the full complement of his squad in recent weeks. Apart from the likes of Fabio Viera (groin) and JurienTimber (knee), the squad is relatively fit and good to go in games. Raya has remained the undisputed number one this campaign and could be called upon to be in goal again.

Arsenal XI: Raya, Kiwior, Saliba, Gabriel, White, Havertz, Rice, Odegaard, Saka, Jesus, Martinelli

Apart from Dele Alli, Everton does not have any major injury concerns ahead of the visit of the league’s bottom side.

Everton XI: Pickford; Coleman(C), Tarkowski, Branthwaite, Mykolenko; Young, Garner, André Gomes, McNeil; Doucouré; Calvert-Lewin

Prediction

Arsenal need no introduction, and with their impressive and dominant style of play, that should take them past Everton.

Dyche’s side plays with controlled aggression and is defensively solid. By embracing counter-pressing, they harmonize with their opponents enabling them to match the play style of the opposition and level the playing field.

However, they should not be able to trouble the Gunners in this game. With that in mind, this should end in a comfortable win for Mikel Arteta’s men as they wrap up their season.

Arsenal 3-0 Everton
