Arsenal‘s failure to qualify for next season’s Champions League is a “nightmare” outcome, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Mikel Arteta’s team looked on course to finish in the top four for the first time since 2015-2016, but a poor end to the season saw Tottenham pip them to the coveted fourth spot on the final-day, despite their win over Everton at the Emirates.

Dreadful defeats to both Newcastle United and Spurs cost them their place in Europe’s elite competition when a few weeks before then, they looked well on course to get the job done.

Following two disappointing eighth-place finishes, their worst for more than 20 years in the Premier League era, Arteta appeared to have finally cracked it and got Arsenal back into the big time.

Despite losing three games on the bounce at the beginning of April, four consecutive victories – especially against rivals Manchester United –  put the north London outfit within one win of their lofty target.

All they needed to do was beat or draw against Antonio Conte’s Spurs and Champions League football was confirmed.

Arsenal were the only side in the top six that had no European football to contend with this season, which is why transfer insider and journalist Jones described their failed top-four bid as a “nightmare”.

He said to GIVEMESPORT: “It’s a nightmare for Arsenal to not finish in the top-four, because this was their chance this season with no European football.

“They had a clear run at finishing as high as they can in the league, and to still fall short when this has been their full focus, it’s a bit of a nightmare.”

Our thoughts…

Indeed, Arsenal’s failure to reach the Champions League place is a nightmare outcome for Arteta and the whole club.

The coveted fourth spot was all but there for the taking after an impressive four wins on the bounce between mid-April and May and the aura and excitement around the whole club was stark until they let it slip at the last hurdle.

The Champions League is certainly where dreams are made of, and the Gunners stars will be incredibly disappointed not to qualify for the competition, and what does it mean for Arteta’s top summer targets, will they want to still join the Emirates project with no Tuesday night football on the horizon.

The Arsenal hierarchy have a tough job on their hands convincing targets to join the club without it.
