Ozil was subject to criticism from sections of the media, including Piers Morgan and Jamie Carragher, after it emerged that he had rejected the 12 month 12.5% pay-cut proposal.

The German was one of three players who refused to take a drop in pay – the other two squad members remain anonymous.

The Daily Mirror claiming that ‘he may be willing to do it in the future’ but ‘did not want to rush into a decision’.

However, according to ESPN, Ozil, who has engaged in a lot of charity work over the years is willing to go through with a reduction in pay provided the conditions are right.

The report explains that Ozil could even agree to a bigger reduction than the rest of the squad, but feels the process so far has been rushed.

It will be interesting to see if Arsenal can reach an agreement with the 31-year-old, who is the club’s highest earner. Many of the club’s fans have come out in defence of the former Germany international who is known for philanthropy away from the pitch.
