Arsene Wenger hints to outstaying his welcome at Arsenal

Arsene Wenger waved goodbye to the club in May 2018

Arsene Wenger has admitted that ‘perhaps’ he stayed at Arsenal for too long.

The Gunners legend ended his 22-year reign in May following a difficult season at the Emirates.

Arsenal finished sixth and struggled defensively on all fronts throughout the campaign.

The 68-year-old, who was appointed on October 1, 1996, stepped down, but still boasts three Premier League titles and seven FA Cups.

Many believe the Frenchman should have quit the club sooner if not for his stubbornness to continue. Despite signing a new two-year deal in May 2017, Wenger only completed half of the contract before moving on.

In a wide-ranging interview with French outlet RTL, Wenger had this to say when asked what the biggest mistake of his career was: “Perhaps staying at the same club for 22 years.

“I am someone who likes to move around a lot, but I also like a challenge. I’ve been a prisoner of my own challenge at times.”
