Manchester City assistant coach Mikel Arteta has spoken out for the first time after failing in his pursuit of the Arsenal manager’s job.

The former Gunner was reported as the front runner for the role to succeed Arsene Wenger before Unai Emery was opted after the Arsenal board got cold feet.

Arteta will take charge of Manchester City for Wednesday’s Champions League tie against Lyon, with boss Pep Guardiola banished to the stands.

At 36, becoming a head coach remains part of the 36-year-old’s ambitions, but he is content to still be learning under Guardiola.

“The decision was made and I am so happy the decision was made,” he said (via The Mirror).

“I am privileged to be where I am. I feel very fulfilled. If you ask, one day in the future, will I be a coach? The answer is probably yes.

“But I’m really happy where I am and really enjoying the moment I’m living.

“We have a fantastic momentum and there’s still a lot of room for this club to grow – so I am very pleased with where I am.”

Gooners, would you have liked to see Arteta in charge? Let us know in the comments…
