Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny is expected to miss both legs of their crucial Europa League semi-final tie with Atletico Madrid, but the Egyptian could still make the World Cup this summer.

Elneny was stretchered off during Arsenal’s 4-1 rout of West Ham on Sunday.

The midfielder sustained ankle ligament damage, though the severity of the problem was initially played down by Arsenal’s medical staff, who said Elneny had only rolled his ankle.

As reported by Sky Sports, the Gunners have since revealed the true extent of the Egyptian’s problem.

The club confirmed in a statement: “Further to assessments and scans on Sunday and Monday, we can confirm that Mo Elneny has sustained ligament damage to his left ankle.

“We are hoping that Mo will available for Arsenal again this season and we are keeping in regular contact with the Egyptian Football Association.”

Elneny who arrived at Arsenal in January 2016 recently put pen to paper on a new long-term deal. The defensive midfielder has been utilised as a squad player by Arsene Wenger for much of this season – the Frenchman’s offered him just 13 Premier League appearances this term.
