Arsenal youngster Bukayo Saka missed out on the 2022 Kopa Trophy after Barcelona’s Gavi won the gong.

THE LOWDOWN: IMPRESSIVE SAKA

The Academy graduate has enjoyed a brilliant career in Arsenal’s colours so far. After his debut under Unai Emery, he has grown to become a star in North London and the Premier League.

He has been Arsenal’s player of the season for the past two campaigns and has started this campaign in brilliant form as well. He has four goals and four assists in the Premier League and has been the match-winner in the Gunners’ past three games.

In a nutshell, It’s not surprising that he was nominated for the best U21 award (Kopa Trophy) for his exploits last season.

THE LATEST: KOPA TROPHY SNUB

Barcelona midfielder Gavi was named the 2022 Kopa Trophy winner at the 66th Ballon d’Or ceremony held on Monday.

Completing the top three in the category were Jamal Musiala (Bayern Munich) and Eduardo Camavinga (Real Madrid). Paris Saint-Germain’s Nuno Mendes was named in the top five alongside RB Leipzig defender and Chelsea target Josko Gvariol who shared sixth place alongside Ryan Gravenberch of Ajax.

Arsenal star Bukayo Saka was among those in the running for the award but he was only able to manage an eighth-place finish.

Saka was the only Premier League player among the 10 nominees for the award.

THE VERDICT: PROUD MOMENT

This award has come and gone and he will need to keep up his form and performance if he’s going to be recognized in seasons to come. Just last month, he was named the England men’s player of the year (2022) – a testament to the fact that the past one calendar year has been outstanding for him.

Saka can be proud of what he has achieved so far in his career and being named the eighth-best U21 player in the world is something to be proud about.
