New Barcelona signing Frenkie De Jong has revealed he dreamed of playing for Arsenal before securing his move to the Camp Nou.
De Jong was unveiled by the La Liga champions this week having agreed a £65million deal from Ajax earlier this year.
The 22-year-old midfielder rose to prominence last season during Ajax’s unlikely run to the Champions League semi finals. He was instrumental at the heart of the Dutch side’s remarkable run dominating the midfield during landmark victories against Real Madrid and Juventus.
De Jong signed a five-year deal with Barca, but has revealed it was once his dream to emulate Dutch legend Marc Overmars and play for Arsenal.
He told Voetbal International (via The Sun): “In my mind, I have had the following list for a long time: Ajax-Arsenal-Barcelona, call it the Marc Overmars route.
“But then again, if you can go directly to Barcelona, then you are right where you want to be. Faster than you ever dared to dream.”
Unai Emery is still working on maximising the most of his £45m budget.
