Now that the Premiership has been wrapped up, Dennis Bergkamp has already set his sights on retaining the title next season. This is important because we can then stamp our authority on the Premiership and signal the beginning of an Arsenal dominated era.
“There’s so much distance now between us and United and Chelsea,” said Bergkamp.
“When you look at that, everybody has to say we’re the best team in the country. We’ve shown that over the whole season and now it’s important to do it again. I’m confident about that.”
Few would disagree that Arsenal have played football of the highest quality this season and Bergkamp was quick to acknolwedge this.
“The way we’ve played football is quite exceptional and we have really deserved this. In 2002, we played like that as well but not as much as now. This is probably the best football we’ve ever played at Arsenal.”
The captain Patrick Vieira also echoed Bergkamp’s comments stating the importance of retaining the title.
“To win the title is one thing but we want to achieve something special so our main target is to win back-to-back titles.”
“If you want to be successful and you look at Manchester United in the 1990s or Liverpool in the 1970s and 1980s, they won the title two, three or four times in a row and that makes you a great team.”
“We have to do it too. We are capable of that though and we have the hunger and determination to do it. We want more trophies and more success as we’re a special team.”
Paddy also stated his desire for this team to be considered as one of the greats of club football, pinpointing success in the Champions League as the main goal.
“I hope we can go all the way in Europe. We had a little sniff of it this season. We feel we could and should have won it,” said Vieira.
“That’s a motivation for me, although the league is always something special. We want to win the Champions League and it’s the one thing that is missing. Losing in the quarter-finals is still in our minds.”
