Arsenal left it late to see off Red Star Belgrade on Thursday night, but Olivier Giroud’s stunning strike was worth the wait.
Arsene Wenger’s second string side were far from well-oiled in the first-half. However, a resurgent second period saw the Gunners’ efforts pay off as Giroud’s acrobatic effort finished off a superb move.
A clean sheet in Belgrade was the perfect response to Troy Deeney’s attack on the players last weekend. The Hornets skipper questioned the character of the team following Arsenal’s 2-1 defeat at Watford.
There are few stadiums more intimidating than Red Stars Marakana, and the feverish atmosphere produced by the 50,000-plus home fans promised to test Arsenal’s character to the full.

Giroud’s spectacular goal means Arsenal are top of the standings in Group H, five points ahead of BATE Borisov.
Arsenal fans are still loving the Frenchman’s finish which has come four years to the day of Jack Wilshere’s superb goal against Norwich in 2013.
Take a look at what they’ve had to say on Twitter…
Whoa.. brilliant goal by Giroud, superbly assisted by Wilshere/Walcott. 👍

Giroud's career highlight reel is 3,000 embarrassing misses, a bunch of good headers, and two dozen sumptuous, greatest-of-all-time finishes

Better than Wilshere v Norwich. Giroud’s finish beats the scorpion. Wilshere once again proving he should be playing in the Premier League.

OMG that was like a mix of Wilshere v Norwich and Giroud v Palace IN ONE GOAL.
