Arsenal’s Fans & Their Passion for the Club

Through the years, there have been many times that Arsenal Football Club has been one of the dominant forces in the English game, and other times when they have been lacking lustre, flirting with the bottom of the table. However, one thing that has never changed throughout any of these moments is the undying love the fans have for the team. Supporting a club like this cannot be changed; once you’re a Gunner, you’re always a Gunner.

In the past couple of decades, fans have been lucky enough to see Arsenal lift an abundance of trophies with some of the best football players and managers ever to grace the pitch. Now the new era of Arteta is here, and the team looks to have the best EPL Odds for lifting the Premier League trophy once again.

Throughout this article, we are going to look at some of the key reasons the love for Arsenal is so big from the fans. While other clubs may not agree, there is no arguing that Arsenal is one of the biggest teams in world football, steeped in history and tradition.

History

There has been a long and prestigious history when it comes to Arsenal Football Club. A club filled with traditions and trophies ever since Herbert Chapman took over as manager in 1925 and completely changed the way things were done at the club. When Chapman saw Arsenal’s magnificent stadium at Highbury, he realized how big the club could be and what kind of atmosphere and feeling could be encapsulated within the ground.

The rest, as they say, is history! Since the arrival of Chapman all those years ago, Arsenal has continued to operate with dignity and flair, and won many trophies, and that has continued since they left the marbled halls of Highbury for the Emirates.

Chapman was a maverick innovator and the main man behind changing the name of the Gillespie Road tube station to Arsenal. To this day, Arsenal is the only Premier League team to have a station named after them. This makes for a great photo opportunity for traveling fans coming from far away. Chapman was also one of the first managers to advocate the use of floodlights within stadiums, artificial pitches, and numbers on the back of player shirts. Throughout his entire reign, Arsenal continued to dominate English football until his untimely death in 1934.

The legacy that Herbert Chapman set can still be seen today, with every manager that has since been at Arsenal trying to live up to the high standards he set for the club.

Arsène Wenger

Love him or hate him, there is no denying that Arsène Wenger brought a change to Arsenal, and perhaps the entire English game, from when he first took charge of the club. Through his reign, he led Arsenal to three league titles and four FA cups, as well as a Champions League final visit in 2006. Wenger finished in the top four in every single season he was with Arsenal, which is a formidable achievement in itself.

Arsenal also experienced great success before Wenger took over, under the management of George Graham, although the style of play was heavily criticized by neutral fans. When Wenger joined, he changed the way that Arsenal played, and before long, the team was receiving praise from critics and football fans alike. When Arsenal was playing at their best under the rule of Wenger, it was a beautiful sight to see them in full flow, not just for the fans but for lovers of the game in general.

Wenger did more than change how his team played; he also changed the sports science behind the scenes, such as the way players played the game. It wasn’t long before his techniques spread through the English game, boosting the overall level at which the game was played. Through his knowledge, he helped to prolong the careers of his legendary defense, who supplied the backbone of Arsenal’s success.

The Invincibles

Arsenal fans have been privileged enough to see many fantastic achievements over the years, but none better than the achievement set by the team in the 2003/04 Premier League season, when Arsenal went through the entire season without being defeated once in their 38 games. This of course, resulted in the team winning the league that year, making it one of the most glorious seasons for all Arsenal fans.

While the members of the Invincibles team have all now hung up their playing boots, for Arsenal fans, the memories will live on for an eternity, especially for those lucky enough to witness it at the time. It’s doubtful if this amazing feat will ever be repeated, with so many changes to the game, and it will truly take something extraordinary to do so. The Invincibles Arsenal team included such greats as Denis Bergkamp, Thierry Henry, Robert Pires, and Patrick Vieira, and the current squad has a lot to live up to if they are to attempt to emulate such magnificent players, but the signs are looking very good as they sit at the top of the table in March 2023!

The Emirates Stadium

The move from Highbury to the Emirates stadium raised concerns for many fans. A similar, albeit smaller, project had cost other clubs enormous amounts of money. Also, Highbury, Arsenal’s traditional home, would be converted into houses, apartments, and gardens, a thought that did not appeal to the fans.

Despite both grounds being incredible, Arsenal has been able to compete financially with the best clubs in Europe at the Emirates Stadium. In the meantime, the management has managed to keep the team competitive while working hard to secure the club’s future while paying off debts for the new stadium.

All the facilities inside the stadium are so easy to access, and the stadium itself is magnificent. If you’re ever in North London, a stadium tour is a must! Arsenal’s match-day income now equals those of the biggest teams in the Premier League, and the fans now have a much more comfortable experience watching them.
