Arsenal legend Alan Smith says Mesut “close to signing a new contract” with Arsenal.

The Gunners midfielder’s current deal expires at the end of the season and the suggestions were Ozil planned to leave in the summer.

In Thursday’s press conference Arsene Wenger insisted Ozil will be staying beyond the January window. And Smith believes he’s set to extend his stay.

“My sources tell me he is quite close to signing a new contract,” Smith told Premier League Daily (via Sky Sports). “We’ve not heard much on that and it sounds like negotiations have gone on behind the scenes and he will sign.

“He’s been a different player the last couple of months when he’s been fit. He’s really been putting in a shift, he looks energised, more enthusiasm than he did have and he looks the player that we all think he can be on a consistent basis.

The German has shown fine form for Arsenal so far this term. Ozil, who has been sidelined with a knee problem, has scored four and assisted five so far.

It’s uncertain how long the new contract will run. Ozil signed a five-year deal when he joined in a club-record £42.5m move from Real Madrid in 2013.

His teammate Sanchez will not be at Arsenal for much longer however. The Chilean is expected to join Manchester United before this weekend’s visit of Crystal Palace.

Gooners, we want to hear from you! Are you pleased Mesut is staying? Let us know in the comments…
