“I am a German when we win and an immigrant when we lose”

Mesut Ozil has announced his retirement from international football.

The Gunners forward who broke the news on social media, claims he’s been a victim of racist abuse since being pictured with Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Ozil who has been crowned Germany Player of the Year on five occasions, also claimed he was being blamed for the country’s disappointing World Cup.

In May, Ozil was criticised after being photographed with president Erdogan at a London event.

The midfielder attended the event with fellow Germany international Ilkay Gundogan. Both Ozil and Manchester City’s Gundogan are of Turkish descent.

Ozil says he and Gundogan talked about football with the president.

The Arsenal midfielder, who is of mixed German and Turkish heritage, said he and his family had received hate mail, threatening phone calls and social media abuse.

Gooners, was our star man right to retire? Let us know in the comments…
