Juventus legend Gigi Buffon has suggested that Wojciech Szczesny is a “better goalkeeper” than himself.
Szczesny spent two years out on loan at Roma before leaving Arsenal permanently and signing for Juventus this summer in a deal worth £10m.
The Poland international is set to replace Buffon, 39, as the Serie A club’s No 1 when the Juve legend hangs up his gloves at the end of the season.
And the veteran believes the former Arsenal shot-stopper has already edged passed him.
As reported by The Sun, he said: “I will retire because I need to respect the choices of the club.
“They bought a younger and better goalkeeper than me, like Szczesny.
“I don’t want to put Juve in a difficult position. New goalkeepers must replace me and they should do it quickly
“The only thing I can do is to train and work hard and honour my career until the end.”
Buffon has made 173 appearances for the Italy national side in a career that has spanned over 20 years.
Szczesny, who signed a four-year deal with Italian outfit will be under pressure to hit the ground running next season.
