Charlie Nicholas has told Unai Emery that he must drop one Arsenal star if the team are to move forward.

The Gunners were victorious in Frankfurt in midweek, but had failed to win in their previous three before their Europa League clash on Thursday.

With Premier League action against Aston Villa on the horizon, Nicholas believes boss Unai Emery has no option but to drop Granit Xhaka for Sunday’s clash against Aston Villa.

The Swiss midfielder has come in for fierce criticism so far this term after putting in a number of below-par performances.

Joe Willock was outstanding in the 3-0 win over Frankfurt – the midfielder who recently turned 20 could be an option to play alongside Matteo Guendouzi. While Lucas Torreira has been tipped for a more attacking role after he too impressed in Germany.

Nicholas wants to see more from Nicolas Pepe, but is certain Granit Xhaka needs to be dropped.

‘They must get more from Nicolas Pepe and he must be match fit now,’ said Nicholas.

‘Pepe needs to use his trickery and pace to help Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Unai Emery must stick with Reiss Nelson or Joe Willock.

‘How can you make sense of the defence? I don’t know who will partner David Luiz. It doesn’t matter whether there are one or two midfielders protecting the back four and I think it is time to leave Granit Xhaka out of the side.’
