David Luiz says he has second guessed his decision to transfer from Chelsea to Arsenal.

The Gunners centre-back arrived at the Emirates last summer in an £8m move after being informed by Chelsea boss Frank Lampard that he was surplus to requirements.

Luiz has joined an underachieving Arsenal side who were enduring a dismal Premier League season prior to the coronavirus European outbreak.

Just months before Luiz had played in Chelsea’s Europa League final win over Arsenal at the end of a campaign where he had made 50 appearances for his side.

The man who enjoyed two successful spells at Stamford Bridge has admitted to having his reservations about making the switch.

“I was always very happy at Chelsea. And then the understanding of knowing that my cycle was over, even though I thought it wasn’t going to end that way, in a quick decision,” Luiz told ESPN Brasil. “I decided to leave Chelsea before I even had my doors open at Arsenal.

It’s been a tough start to his Arsenal career for David Luiz

Luiz’s first season at the Emirates has also not been without heavy criticism of his defending and the ability of the rest of the Arsenal backline.

“It wasn’t easy at first. Not only of adaptation, but about taking the criticism, the sadness of many Chelsea fans for not understanding my personal decisions,” Luiz added. “My respect and love for Chelsea has always been true.

“It was difficult to deal with the emotional part, then playing, things were not happening on the pitch, the results weren’t coming.

“[Former Arsenal boss] Unai [Emery] is a great coach and a great person, but things weren’t happening for him either.

“So you get into a stir and try to stay upright and strong. And I often wondered why this decision was made. Why is this happening?”
