France coach Didier Deschamps has disclosed that William Saliba’s inexperience led to his substation in France’s 2-0 defeat to Denmark.

THE LOWDOWN: LES BLUES’ CAREER

2022 has been an excellent year for William Saliba who has finally found London home after a turnaround. The highly-rated French defender, who has been on Arsenal’s books since 2019, is fast becoming a prominent member of the Gunners team after a wonderful start to the season.

He has formed a reliable partnership with Gabriel Malghaes at the heart of Arsenal’s defence and he is close to earning a contract renewal at the Emirates in the coming weeks.

Saliba’s first national team call-up came in March this year and he recently got his seventh appearance in the 2-0 defeat at the hands of Denmark over the weekend.

THE LATEST: MANAGER’S REVELATION

France manager Didier Deschamps has revealed that William Saliba’s inexperience was the reason for his substitution at halftime of France’s 2-0 defeat to Denmark.

France went two nil down at the break in their final Nations League group game, and former world cup winner made the decision to take the Arsenal defender alongside Real Madrid midfielder Eduardo Camavinga out of the game.

Despite the changes, the result did not change and Deschamps admitted via the Mirror that his ‘young French side’ caused him some issues in the game.

“I don’t think it’s a shipwreck, we also had a lot of chances but we were ineffective, we made some errors when playing out from the back,” he said.

“It’s a young French side, where the majority of the players don’t have experience at the very highest level. It’s not a question of formations, but when you have four corners and a Danish player is left alone each time, you can play with three, five or twelve at the back, it doesn’t change a thing.”

The 53-year-old went on to add that it’s not the time to panic after such a performance with the World Cup just less than two months away.

“There’s no need to worry, the fact that the players with international experience are coming back will do us good,” he said.

“Obviously, we have young, quality players who are learning but the important thing is to recover all our vital, experienced players for two months’ time.”

THE VERDICT: LEARNING CURVE

Saliba has been good for Arsenal this season but his performance against Denmark would definitely come as a reminder that he still has much room for improvement. The only way to react to that underwhelming outing is to bounce back against Tottenham at the weekend.

In addition, he has the desire to be at the World Cup, but he really needs to raise his game before the final list of players will be made public by Deschamps.
