Arsenal have now made contact with the agent of the young left-back Aaron Hickey, but nothing has been agreed ahead of the summer…

Described as “incredible” by Aston Villa coach Austin MacPhee during the pair’s time at Hearts, Hickey has been linked to the Gunners in recent weeks.

Outlet 1000 Cuori Rossoblu claimed the Gunners were at the front of the queue to make a move for Hickey, who could command a £17m fee.

Calcio Napoli 24 then went on to report that talks between the Serie A outfit and the Gunners have gone smoothly and they have found an agreement worth between €20m and €25m to sign the talented defender.

The two clubs worked together last summer, with right-back Takehiro Tomiyasu moving from Serie A to the Premier League.

The two clubs subsequently used those ‘excellent’ relations, the report adds, to iron out a deal for Hickey.

Italian Journalist Fabrizio Romano was speaking on the Que Golazo YouTube channel regarding the future of the Bologna youngster.

He dismissed the above reports, claiming there is no deal in place between the two clubs with initial contact only taking place with Hickey’s agent.

He said: “So for Aaron Hickey, at the moment they just had some contacts with his agent but nothing is done, I’m told, as of today [Monday].

“So maybe we need to wait and see what happens, but there are many clubs interested in Aaron Hickey. He’s doing very good with Bologna here in Serie A.

“So very interesting player, but at the moment, are just contacts with this agent and nothing agreed between Arsenal and Aaron Hickey.”

Our thoughts…

Considering the sheer amount of potential Hickey is quite clearly in possession of, Gunners supporters will be elated by the interest their club is showing in the youngster.

Ranking among full-backs in Europe’s top five leagues and continental competitions in the top 1% for least amount of times dribbled past per 90 (0.35), top 1% for goals minus expected goals per 90 (+0.13), and top 1% for fouls drawn per 90 (2.41).

He certainly has the potential to become one of the best full-backs in the world in the future, and the north London outfit could certainly do with bolstering their options at left full-back this summer, especially with Kieran Tierney’s injury record.

Therefore, Romano’s comments will delight a lot of Arsenal fans, with Hickey believed to be one of the hottest prospects in European football in his position.
