Former Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers believes his old side’s failure to bring Alexis Sanchez to Anfield cost them dearly.

The Reds came close to landing the ex-Barcelona winger in 2014 after lining him up as a replacement for the departing Luis Suarez, but they were beaten to the punch by Arsenal.

The Gunners, who signed Sanchez for £35m have had great success with the Chilean at the forefront of their attack. The 28 year-old who turned down a move to Anfield has scored 73 goals for the north Londoners and lifted two FA Cups so far.

Rodgers has revealed his regret for not being able to convince the Gunners star to sign for Liverpool.

“We felt like Luis was going to move on and we needed to get a world-class operator to go like-for-like,” the current Celtic manager told TalkSport (via Football.london).

Rodgers is currently head coach at Celtic.

“We finished second in the league playing a great level of football. Players were flexible in how they could play and then it was about trying to make that next step.

“And for that we needed to get a replacement. And we deemed Sanchez to be that one.”

Sanchez is all set to be on the move again in the New Year or at the end of the season. Manchester City are currently favourites to land the forward whose contract is up in June.
