Five Arsenal vs Liverpool moments us Gooners fondly remember

Arsenal vs Liverpool remains a big match in the country for historical reasons. The two sides were involved in plenty of title defining matches in the early nineties, and although tomorrow’s match sees the number 11 team against the number 6, the fixture is still promises to be an electric affair.

Wenger echoed these sentiments in press conference yesterday.

“Yes, of course,” he said. “There’s a special atmosphere.

“I have a lot of respect for the crowd at Liverpool because they stand behind their team. I remember one day we were leading 5-1 at Liverpool and they were chanting ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’. It’s one of the few grounds in the world where you can see that. There’s a special combination of knowledge of the game at Liverpool and support for their team. I have a huge respect for that.”

Aside from last season’s debacle, this fixture has drawn up some fantastic spectacles in recent years. Ahead of tomorrow’s clash, let’s relive some of our favorite memories in this fixture.

Ramsey volley

It is almost easy to forget that Arsenal beat Liverpool twice last year. The first was a convincing performance at the Emirates and a comfortable 2-0. The second goal in that match was a superb volley from Aaron Ramsey (he’s making a habit of them apparently) into the top corner. Toure’s face in the picture says it all. What a hit.

  Walcott run-2011 Champions League

Adebayor scored the goal, but everyone remembers that unbelievable Walcott run. The ball fell to Walcott at the edge of Arsenal’s box and he ran the entire length of the pitch to set up Adebayor. Scintillating run, I still remember the Liverpool players dropping like flies especially Macherano who was left lunging at air. Arsenal didn’t win, but what an incredible Champion’s League tie that was. Classic encounter. Watch that run down below.

Henry solo run

As good a solo goal as you will ever see in Arsenal’s 3-1 win over Liverpool in the F.A Cup in 2007. Sheer pace and power from the King. Henry showed why he is the one and only. His initial touch looked to be going nowhere, but when he mugged Carragher down the sideline, I knew something magical was on the horizon. He drifted into the box and finished with his usual style and flair. Sensational.

Arshavin hits four

One of the best solo performances I have ever personally witnessed. Our little Russian was at his superlative best (too bad this form didn’t last too long) and almost single-handedly won the match for us that night at Anfield. Torres’ late equalizer robbed Arsenal of the three points, but nobody can take away Arshavin’s man of the match performance. Arshavin’s celebration of the fourth will go down in Arsenal folklore, where he ran to the corner flag holding up four fingers. Class.

Thomas wins the title at Anfield

The Arsenal memory I am not old enough to remember personally, but will still never forget. I get chills every time I see it. Arsenal needed to win by two clear goals to snatch the title at the death, and I can only imagine what it would have been like to watch that match live. To go into a team’s stadium who only need to draw or lose 1-0 to win a title, and come out with that victory is truly a remarkable achievement. Thomas struck in the dying moments of the game and I will always remember Brian Moore’s match commentary. By remember, I mean from the youtube clip I watched over 100 times.

“Thomas, charging through the midfield… it’s up for grabs now! Thomas! Right at the end!” Chilling.
