FIVE names who should ALREADY be on Arsenal’s ‘succession plan’

“So much of the attention on a football club is around an individual and that’s very understandable at Arsenal because we have a giant who’s managing us,”

“Arsène has been a fantastic driver and has put the club in a great, great position. The biggest challenge we’re going to face as a club is that, when that transition from Arsène to the next manager of our football club happens – and I don’t know when that’s going to be – that we come through that strongly.”

That was Ivan Gazidis talking to Arsenal.com and bringing a tear to my eye as I prove that, despite being a fully-grown man, I’ll be inconsolable when the time does sadly come for Arsene Wenger to leave the club.

It’s sensible for the club to be putting in a contingency plan, however, deciding on the person to step into some pretty big shoes will be one of the trickiest decisions the club has ever made in its glorious history.

Dennis Bergkamp – It just feels right, the prodigal son returning after earning his stripes with Ajax. Not sure he could manage the away games in the Champions League from his sofa, though, givem the Dutchman’s fear of flying.

Diego Simeone – The traits this Arsenal squad lack are everything that the Atletico Madrid gaffer possesses in abundance. An injection of aggression and passion may well do the trick for the Gunners.

Steve Bould – Probably go down well with the fans having a former Arsenal player taking over the hot seat. Bould will know the ins and outs of the club having been Arsene Wenger’s assistant manager and would perhaps make the transitional period less rocky. However, given his lack of experience as the main man in the dugout, questions will no doubt be raised.

Roberto Martinez – For me, the Everton manager shouldn’t be a consideration, however, given the way the former Wigan Athletic manager conducts himself and sets his teams out to play, he will no doubt be linked.

Martinez’s start to the season with the Toffees highlights that the flavour of month bandwagon was, as always, misplaced hispterness.

Jurgen Klopp – Surely the perfect choice andd the only real standout candidate? At Borussia Dortmund, Klopp would’ve have experienced similar troubles that encountered Arsene Wenger i.e. bigger clubs, more money and losing star players continually.
