Former Arsenal midfielder Gilberto Silva believes the “time has come” for Arsene Wenger to consider leaving the Gunners.

The Brazilian spent six years between 2002 and 2008 at Arsenal, and was part of the squad that became the “Invincibles” but explaining his reasoning for why it maybe time for his former boss to depart, Gilberto stated it was the freshness of ideas from younger managers that are proving the Arsenal manager’s undoing. In an interview with Sport 360 (via the Evening Standard), he said:

“Wenger has spent a lot more years than them (Conte, Guardiola and Klopp) in the Premier League. They are younger and motivated and they have a lot of energy to look around and source ways to win against Wenger.”

“He has his own way of working, in which he believes. Irrespective of whether you are either a young or an old coach, you have to believe in something, and that’s what he does.”

Wenger still has a two year contract extension on the table from the Gunners. He revealed last month he would take his time deciding on his future and that it may not be until the end of April until he tells the Arsenal hierarchy of his decision.

The 10-2 aggregate defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League last 16 may prove influential on his choice but it will no doubt prove a difficult decision for a manager who has spent 20 years at the club.
