Former Arsenal player Robert Pires has revealed the real reason behind Alexis Sanchez’s omission from the starting line up against Liverpool last weekend.

The Frenchman said that the 28 year old was on the receiving end of a bad tackle and walked out of training. Manager Arsene Wenger then punished him for leaving the training exercise early. Speaking to beIN Sports (quotes via the Sun) Pires said:

“Claims in the press there was a fight are false. I was there. There was a bad tackle on AS, a clash, he left the pitch. Fans have to understand, there was a disciplinary sanction. Nothing serious happened. I was there yesterday too. there is no problem.”

Reports in the media had claimed that Sanchez had had a falling out with Wenger before the Liverpool match but it seems the truth was much less dramatic than that.

The forward did however come in for some criticism for his display against Bayern Munich in the 5-1 defeat last night, and the fact he could be seen laughing and smiling on the bench despite his side losing badly to the Bundesliga champions.

Most press reports still believe that that the Chilean will leave Arsenal in the summer when he will have just 12 months to go on his current deal. Agreement over a new contract doesn’t seem to be likely at this stage.
