Let's get this done. Fairly decent defender but as been mentioned before his pasing ability is where we hope to gain the most.

For a team that plays from the back, our defenders are so limited on the ball.

We started first game of last season with Cech and Mustafi in the back line. If we start this season with Leno and Luiz that will be a huge improvement when it comes to not shooting ourselves in the foot by giving the opposition cheap handovers.

Still worry about Luiz making stupid decisions. He can be pretty brainless at times. God forbid we play him and Mustafi at the same time.

Was just thinking, does this mean 3 at the back ? Luiz is superb as the guy that defender reading the game and making interceptions , generally playing on the front foot and launching attacks .

Not so good at the other stuff .

Özil had 3 "big chances" created.

And we play a lopsided system to accommodate this guy

You guys honestly think he’s a good defender? He’s the only defender who spends more time in the opposition area. It’s bad when we’ve needed a CB since the start of the transfer window and the only one we sign is one that can’t defend

"But he hasn't had any proper attackers to work with."

Now we added Pepe and Ceballos:

"Too many creative players who occupy his operating space."

Players who we’ve purchased from Chelsea in recent history or I care to remember.

Diarra
Gallas
Benayoun
Cech

None of them worth carrot and transfers we should of avoided like the plague.

Luiz is just a 5th Mistake waiting to happen

Diarra was an elite talent and a bargain for £4m. Stood out in the few appearances he made for us - specifically Blackburn away in the FA Cup.

Wenger was an idiot for ignoring him despite Flamini and Gilberto being in the final year at the club.

Idk why Luiz is so underrated by Arsenal fans.
Sure he isn't top class, and he had a few terrible moments in his career.

But you don't spend that much time at Chelsea, while being mainly a starter, if you're ****.
Mourinho & Conte, who are known to be defensive minded coaches both relied on him and have built successful winning team with him in the side.

He is no VVD, but last year he was much better than all our CB, Koscielny included.
He's passing is great, our coach wants to build from the back so it's an important asset to have.
His physicality is going to help us against relegation sides who wants to bully us in the box.

He's a **** and god knows how it's useful in today's game.

For £8M it's a no brainer. Get him on short term deal.

Tony Adams covers that situation in his book. Says diarra didn't put in the hard yards during a game expected of Arsenal players.

Hardest thing in the world to explain to people on arsenal-mania. They still think Elneny was a good buy because he was cheap.

I haven’t seen anyone say that. It’s moreso that:

1) We have a short term, urgent need for a proven CB who can hit the ground running
2) While Luiz clearly wouldn’t have been many people’s first choice, hearing the fee was £20m and now all of sudden it’s £5m, while Chelsea fans think it should be £30m, means it doesn’t prevent us getting an elite CB and protects
3) We are weakening a top 4 rival who can’t replace him, while strengthening ourselves. He will instantly improve our play from the back which means less reliance on Xhaka’s dawdling

I was critical even in this thread but I had a night to think about it and there are many more pluses than minuses

Ive warmed to this as a Kos replacement. Certainly no worse than Kos and is basically paid for with the Kos and Jenkinson sales.

How can you compare Luiz to Elneny.

Luiz is a proven international brazilian player in the PL. He's won much more things than we won during the same period.
He was rated by great coaches like Conte & Mourinho and was a central piece of their teams.
He's been solid last season.

Elneny was a ***** playing in switzerland ffs.
