“We had to sell our best players and at the same time came Chelsea with unbelievable money, Manchester United, Liverpool and Manchester City. We were on a level where we could not compete financially.”

But you competed on the field, Arsène. It was only the dingbat fans who thought that money wasn’t important in football, that got frustrated with your continuous top 4.

Never mind Arsène those same fans are already turning on Emery

What a man!

Arsenal legend and legend of the broader game. Im so saddened by the fact that he couldnt push on after those early Emirates years. He deserved to go out with the biggest prizes.

I will forever hold you in high esteem Arsène.

Hope to see the day when he can come to the Emirates, at ease. Maybe he doesn't want to be a shadow over successor(s) or probably it is more psychological due to the club being the centre of his life and legacy, and the last few years not being so pleasant. Love the guy. Sometimes don't want to be too sentimental because things move on and there is still a club to support, but what a remarkable giant of a person he is.

Thanks mate, fantastic read. He’s like Jesus they way he affects those who meet him. Except he’s real.

Thought you might like it , there is a whole thread on this guys timeline from Jens to Jack Wilshere pretty interesting stuff . Keown talks about how he was really good at delegating power to the staff , so that's a bit of a contrast to the narrative we hear .

The last thing Wenger was, was an autocrat. People loved him because he gave them autonomy within a framework. You get the best out of people by valuing them. Even those who let him down, he would never disparage. RVP understood that and that’s why he’s been so keen to pay tribute to him many times since, including at the Nordoff Robbins tribute dinner at Grosvenor House a few days ago.
