It's crazy that Emery was playing him in a number 10. the guy is 5'4 with tiny legs, do you really expect him to run 20-30yards to close people down and be successful at it? complete utter madness. Back in his DM role in a compact team and he really is shining!

I could see what he was trying, but there wasn't enough stability and cohesion for it to work it's best. It had no chance when the team was so rotten.

Yes but what Emery was attempting made as much sense as taking the screws off a bike's wheel to fit a GPS unit. He was the most successful manager in Arsenal's history for his first 50 games and Torreira's tenacity breaking up attacks from deep was a big reason for that.

Instead of building on that by addressing a lack of intensity and width in the front line, he pushed a defensive midfielder further forward, not only destablising our build up play from deep but leaving us brutally exposed on turnovers.

Xhaka is still our deepest midfielder though, Torreira plays more of a free role/box to box which wasn't much different than what he played under Emery tbh he's never been a number 10 that's a myth.

Hard to pick a motm last night with so many solid performances but Lucas came out on top

A testament to our performance yesterday is that they could have chosen a near completly different selection for that poll and I'd still been happy with it.

Lucas lifting Papa in the air must be my favorite moment yesterday.

Lucas was playing very well the last two games. Also like how he consistently tries to find Özil between the lines, not with very difficult passes but with a quick turn. Players are also more confident than before to pass it into his feet even with an opponent near. That annoyed me the last few months, complete fear to pass it to someone who has an opponent even remotely close by.

Still needs to work a bit on his physicality. Picks up quite a few knocks and even in a compact system he's running out of gas. These performances are what I expect of him though, very happy with the tenacity. Deserved to crown his performance with a goal, shame he missed.

There's nothing wrong with a 5'4" no. 10.

A certain Argentine was exceptional at that role.

The problem is, Torreira doesn't have the skillset to play like a true number 10.

Vieira was a phenomenal no. 4 but he was poor when he had to step in for Gilberto's role.

a certain no.10 primary role at number 10, wasn't to press and close people down to win the ball high up the pitch. my guess this certain number 10 would've failed miserably at it too.

Özil's confidence and form improvement under Arteta is eye-catching.

But Torreira's transformation is literally couple of levels higher. Brilliant.

Torreira doesn't play much of a different role under Arteta, he's never been a DM or a number 10 for us, people need to stop parroting myths. He played box to box under Emery and now does the same with Arteta. Xhaka has always been our deepest midfielder.

Don’t forget how much he is fouled per game. He gets stuck in, nicks the ball and is often fouled in the process. For some reason the refs offer him, or for that matter, none of our players much protection. Hope he can stay fit regardless. We need him for this.

Facts.

Playing a defensive minded midfielder player further up to stifle the opposition is a popular tactic nowadays tbh. It didn’t work because the player didn’t believe/team was all over the place but it was worth a try.

Nah you’re wrong here.

Torreira is playing a completely different role under Arteta. Significantly deeper, constrained to the right hand side of the pitch, and without much license to bomb forward. He’s playing as a proper DM (alongside Xhaka who covers the left-hand side of the pitch) whereas under Emery he was given a more advanced role and expected to pop up all over.

If you’re not spotting it on tv then just look at the touch maps / heat maps.

This advanced role you guys make a lot out of, was only towards the end of Emery reign though, when the Özil situation fully came to a head.

From his debut until this season he had always been a CM/DM (when he did play)

He played as the most advanced midfielder in many games for us. Call it a 10, AM or whatever, that’s a fact.
