He’s kinda similar to Xhaka in the sense that he’s really really really good at one thing and managers and fans overrate his importance because he has something that makes him a bit different to everyone else. When it comes to carrying the ball up the field there’s no one else at the club that comes close to him but a lot of the other stuff, including the basics he struggles at. I’m actually not sure what he was meant to be doing today. Was he meant to be man-marking Silva or KdB? Be an outlet? Push our wide when we have possession? I’m not sure.

I think one reason as to why managers push Willock up is because I’m not sure he’s a high volume passer. He clearly struggles in that department and most managers prefer the deep midfielders to be passers. Unless he increases his passing ability, he won’t be playing deep any time soon.

Big supporter of Joe. Love his ball carrying ability, dribbling and physique. He just shields the ball so well and quite tidy in possession but he was just shambolic today. Absolutely anonymous and that has been quite the theme this season.

Needs a loan and he's not a #10.

Yep. Wouldn't be against a loan to Bundesliga or Championship but make sure he is getting games in CM.

Never been a fan of either willocks, just not good enough, we should have moved him along with his brother ages ago, but same old Arsenal persisting with Average players.

I'm not a fan of Willock but singling him out when there were worse performers on the pitch is not nice

Well, this is the Joe Willock thread so this is where we bash predominantly him. But if you look at the other threads, it’s not like other players are getting a pass, nor should they. The whole team is currently ****. By far the worst squad we’ve had during the 22 years of me being an Arsenal fan. We have to be cold and ship off a ton a players, mostly seniors, but that goes for the youth as well. We can’t be emotionally tied to them and just keep investing time and money on average talent. Keep Martinelli and Saka, maybe Nelson, the rest should be moving on.

Sad thing with willock is he does one good thing and follows it up with a trash action, like the times he got the ball back with good pressing yesterday and played a soft pass to Saka that he couldn’t do anything with. Not a good time for him to break through sadly.

Maybe

You're wrong, no?
I think there are sam qualities you can work on with Willock, he's not a waste of space. If he really needs to play as 10, you would expect to have 2 skilled wingers in that case who would take the creativity burden. Auba is not that and Saka barely touched the ball.
Think we are not using this player to his strengths

City was walking through him and Guendouzi like they were that wall at the train station in the Harry Potter series.

But Guendouzi seems to get a free ride on here even if he equally as bad. Wonder why. Maybe because he is white?

We had 10 men - we wouldn't have had any of the ball with Vieira and Gilberto in there.

Last night was a débâcle but Willock was hardly at fault - far too early to write him off. Some of the comments in this thread are embarrassing.

City just rinsed Madrid in Madrid - it's no shame to have a quiet game against them - especially with 10 men for virtually half the game.

I don't think Douzi would say he's white.

It's more so that they look busier and always do, but I am not fooled by it.

Willock struggles to get involved in the game when in the 10. This is nothing new. We know this. It's like how Ramsey was always more effective from central midfield. How do you time runs into the box if you are already there just waiting? How do you drive forward of you are waiting for the ball from the person who should be driving forward but can't.

Willock has abilities and traits that suit a deeper position. He has physicality in 50 50 duels and has enough agility to turn and adjust to dribbles. He is also agile enough to time slide tackles and enough pace to get to loose balls quickly. He can spread the ball all over the pitch it he is instructed to. He has that passing range, he can also shoot and finish. However his most visible trait is that he can carry the ball from his own half to the final third Vs ANYBODY. If you can do it vs Liverpool and City. You can do it against anyone.

In this game he did that on a few occasions and he did it from deep. He did it more than Guendouzi and Ceballos, you know why? Because they aren't even capable of doing it. You know when they can do it? In a training game on Arsenal.com videos. Put them in a match and they are running in quick sand. When they get the ball they want to take 5 touches before releasing it. I was watching them every time. It looks neat and tidy holding onto it, drawing 2 players towards you and then passing it backwards, but what use is that? As a midfielder you should be able to assess the situation BEFORE you get the ball. You check your shoulders and you should assess the crowd scene. When you receive it, you should know your options and what you want to do. If you are under pressure you either release it quickly and move or you dribble past it. Ceballos and Guendouzi dribble away from pressure towards their own goal, make a pass and then don't have the speed or agility to dart into space, they just close the space down and point. But on TV it looks fine. In a game if you are the front 3, you are watching that thinking why bother moving, these idiots won't place a pass anyway.

Any team we play finds an out ball. It isn't because our press is rubbish. It's because they have the balls to play it. This forum is safe with Guendouzi, Xhaka and Ceballos because they make you feel safe, they play safe. They only play the ball forward if they are 100 percent sure. That's not good enough. If not we retain possession? To what? Go back to Leno for him to stand on the ball and then kick it long to forwards who don't win aerial duels with midfielders who can't win the second ball. As every game goes on we will pile more and more pressure on ourselves till someone makes a mistake.

AMN did more in 10 minutes that Guendouzi and Ceballos did the entire match. He didn't even have to do much. He ran forwards and backwards. When he got forwards he could recover back. He spent less time on the ball in possession. He played a forward pass that put lacazette in to a position where he should have assisted a goal.

Watch Ceballos on their third goal. He isn't jogging. He is running at full pace and that is the same as AMN jogging. Its ridiculous. Foden is his man. He just needs to follow him into the box, but doesn't bother. His mind isn't even with his club ffs why is he even getting minutes?

I'm sick of our midfield. Looking forward to the next fa cup game where we actually see some agility and pace in there.

Torrreira, Xhaka injured. Ceballos and Guendouzi will start in a double pivot. Absolute joke. Have some balls and play Saka willock and AMN together.

I keep saying this. Unlike Guendouzi and Xhaka, Willock is the kind of player who can receive the ball from deep and hold off challenges but his starting position is too advanced for us to benefit.

I’m amazed there are so many intelligent posters on this forum who don’t get it.
