Do you think Gabriel will end up signing for Arsenal?

Hope we can get some defenders out the door if this one comes off.

Mustafi, Holding, Sokratis and Chambers will be the obvious candidates

Mari already starting to look like a waste of a signing

Well this went quick! Tall, left footed, young. I’ll take it! We’re collecting centrebacks now it seems. Hope we sell a few of the trash ones (basically everyone except Saliba).

An annoying Manc
Since he's linked with us, I decided to watch Chelsea vs Lille & Lille vs Lyon to watch what type of player he is. So for all of you Arsenal fans want to know about him, I'll share what I think about him based on those two matches.

He's a centre back with good strength and pace, not the strongest & the quickest, I would say 7/10 pace & strength.

His ball playing is nothing special from what I watch him & not very good when under pressure.

He's not aggressive defender but also not a passive defender, more in the middle.

His positioning is something he needs to improve. His awareness is also inconsistent, often I saw him looking around where his attackers, often I saw him just in panic mode unaware where his man is and just trying to block crossing. His anticipation skill when handling crossing is probably his main asset.

As a United fan, I'm not a fan of him, prefer Pau Torres. Beside, we never have a good history with Brazilian. Best of luck if you sign him.

Only saw him once against Chelsea and he played very well.

Made Le'Equipe Ligue 1 team of the season so he cant be bad.

I am a little bit scared of this signing but it’s only based on watching him play twice vs Ajax.

He was involved in almost all Ajax goals and in a lot of chances. Granted this is usually the case for a centreback. What stood out for me with Gabriel is how he was always looking at the bal, and not what was happening around him. He always tried to stay in the shape of the defense and keep an eye on the ball. But he never looked at the attackers around him, he was completely unaware of players around him. I don’t know if it’s because he’s used to counter attacking football and not overloads like Ajax do a lot but it worries me. I will try and find long highlights of the games to show you what I mean.

Yeah was that the home game for Lille? He stood out with some incredible tackles then.

We need 4 things in our starting 11 to improve.

A cm who can defend and break out of pressure
A cm who can create and be a two way player
A cf who can hold the ball, dribble, link play and score.
A CB who can cover wide areas with pace and handle 1v1 duels vs the best wingers in the league.

Gabriel is a 1v1 duel specialist. We will also build on his physicality. Looks Kos when he joined and then two seasons later. He is still young and will still make errors, but the key aspect is that he is a stand up tackler who has very good physical ability. He is the coverer where as Saliba is the more front footed defender.

Saliba - Gabriel is the future.

We can spend a year easing him in and building him up, with Luiz here he will settle. I really want this signing.

Praying we can get this done. This lad has the tools to become top drawer.

People like to slate Raul and Edu, but the major signings they've made, as well as the profile of player they're going for, is encouraging. I think we are definitely taking a step in the right direction regarding recruitment.
We can't really judge them until 2/3 seasons have passed under the current structure. I think even the usual suspects know that they just live for the banter.

Its fantasy to expect every transfer to pay off but so far we can mark Tierney, Saliba, Pepe, Ceballos and Martinelli as good signings on paper.

Luiz (although I think he's been unlucky at times), Mari, Willian and Cedric are the ones that people aren't impressed with but they could all be decent options next season.

Lille had the joint fourth best goals conceded record last year and the fifth lowest xG against.

Hard to say how much is down to him but Lille’s net goals were 0.6 goals better off per 90 when he was on the pitch.

Also was top 10 in Ligue for successful pressure %, touches, aerial duels won and completed passes into the final third which is interesting.
