The Wish List

If I may spice up my wishlist because we qualified for the Europa League, I would target my first choice CB: Dias. I only wonder how he would do on the left-side of a CB partnership.

I'm assuming Arteta wants to keep Auba on the wing, hence why I go for a (false) 9 rather than Benrahma/Grealish.

Out: Guendouzi, Lacazette, Sokratis, Kolasinac, Mkhitaryan, Elneny, Mustafi, Holding, Torreira, Xhaka, Chambers (winter), Sheaf, Balogun

In: Dias, Partey, Ceballos (loan+option), Buendia (Aouar if funds allow), Depay

Ideally, I'd get rid of Cedric as well and sign Bogle. Would also like us to sign a talented young LB to deputize for Tierney.

Martinez
Bellerin - Saliba - Dias - Tierney
Ceballos
Partey - Buendia
Pepe - Depay - Aubameyang

Leno
Cedric - Luiz - Marí - ???/Saka
Maitland-Niles
Willock - Saka/ESR
Nelson - Nketiah - Martinelli

This guy would be perfect CF for us, he can drop deep, hold up, bring others into play, he can dribble carrying the ball, create his own chances, create chances for us, is quick and has great strength. He's absolutely perfect for what Arteta wants of the CF.

He is also improving in the air. My number 1 target. Get Lacazette out and get this guy in.

Auba---Edouard---Pepe

That is an absolutely frightening interchangeable front line.

Will just warn this is a lengthy post, but here's my wishful summary of the summer transfer business -

In terms of outgoings, we have a few valuable assets such as Guendouzi, AMN, Holding & Balogun, all of which you'd think we will see the back of this summer.

Add to that the sale of Sokratis & there's a potential for inflow of £60-70m if we are being modest with the transfer fees.

I think Mustafi & Chambers survive another year & Özil sees out his contract (being frozen out the squad most of the year).

When considering incomings, the consensus among the fan base is that it is totally unreasonable to assume we will have a sizeable budget this summer.

However, when you consider that we can potentially generate £60-70m from player sales & will receive additional funds from the FA cup win/EL qualification, it should not seem too far fetched.

Add to that the fact that United & Chelsea etc will be spending £100m+ & Arteta has openly pleaded to fans to trust him when he says he will be backed, it seems as though we will be spending fairly big this summer.

Also important to note that we actually 'spent' nearly £150 million last summer when disregarding payment structures.

With all that in mind, the four players I'd target are Grealish, Partey, Diego Carlos & Ceballos (on loan again with option to buy).

We currently have more than enough firepower in attack with Auba (I think he will sign), Laca, Eddie, Martinelli, Pepe, Saka, Nelson etc so no change needed there.

Partey will complement Xhaka & Ceballos' games and will bring control & solidarity to the midfield which I think allows you to revert to a back four and have the three of them in the centre screening the defence but getting forward on occasion.

With the highly rated Saliba coming in, we should aim to get a more experienced defender with a good age and profile like Diego Carlos to bring a bit more steel to the centre of the back line. I think Saliba & Carlos together completely transforms our defence along with Tierney who is pure class & a recently rejuvenated Bellerin. Martinez is a wall in the net and should be our no.1.

Grealish is perfect for our LW slot as it allows you to push Auba through the middle from the start but also have the flexibility to move Auba back out to the left in game as an inside forward along with Pepe on the right & bring Grealish infield into CAM/False 9. Grealish also offers the option of having him in a midfield three and going with a Auba-Laca-Pepe front there three as we do now.

On paper:
Martinez
Bellerin-Saliba-Carlos-Tierney
Ceballos-Partey-Xhaka
Pepe-Auba-Grealish

I believe that side (if settled & drilled from the start) gets you top 4 next season & provides a solid foundation to build on over the next few windows.

The last few games have taught us that it's not always about having the biggest names, it's about having a spirited and organised side that has a clear defined plan from their manager, which we now have.

Exciting times to be an Arsenal fan again & in Arteta we trust.

This was a great post. Long but really well considered opinions.

I agree that Carlos seems like a great fit and is just entering his prime years.

I just wonder if we want a more focused number 10 specialist instead of Grealish if we’re spending big.
Not sure that we want to play Partey, Xhaka and Ceballos as the mid 3 at the same time.

All in all, agree and this strengthens us in the areas we need most while staying realistic.

I'm convinced now Auba's position is left wing. I think Auba's numbers go up another level with Edouard at 9. The guy really does have everything.

Auba-Edouard-Pepe is definetly good enough for top 4 in my opinion, especially with players like Willian (potentially), Saka and Eddie to come off the bench.

I would definitely prioritise Edouard's signing over the more creative midfielders now.

With Özil/Mustafi/Sokratis definitely off the wage bill in 2021, next summer is the summer to target the likes of Grealish/Aouar.

Gabriel/Partey/Ceballos (loan)/Willian/ Edouard would be immense. Of course this is most likely dependent on outgoings.

Edouard and Auoar are definitely the dream signings. I suspect they’re out of our league with finances though.

Can someone tell me what I’m missing about Depay that people want him?
Haven’t seen him play, but he seems like a like for like with Lacazette. Why not just keep our current Lacazette instead of swapping for a new one? It’s cheaper.

I can't really see either being too expensive tbh. I think the numbers quoted for Edouard are around £35m, and with Aouar around £45m. Provide we manage to sell the right players, I think they are doable deals. Can't really see Aouar happening this summer, but if we find a buyer for Lacazette I can see Edouard happening.

Spot on about Depay as well, I really don't understand the hype around him. 5'9 centre forwards with no pace or exceptional skill do not work in the Premier league, Arsenal fans never learn.

Auba (new deal)
Ceballos (loan)
Diego Carlos
Partey
Coutinho (loan)
Willian (free)

How's that for a summer?

In the context of where the club is currently, and where it needs to be, i'd say 8/10. I'd personally prefer Gabriel to Diego Carlos, and if I am being super greedy, Edouard comes in to replace Lacazette.

Auba/Edouard/Pepe with Coutinho/Willian as creative options, and Ceballos/Partey/Xhaka behind the ball is a serious team.

If we can get that done, the team goes up two or three levels, especially physically and technically.

Reinventing VAR 😡
Should've been him and not Özil who got the contract.
One of our longest serving players and a killer in the FA Cup who always bailed us out in difficult times. It's sad that the board didn't go against Emery's wishes.
It would be cool if Arteta could lure him back in some way, because he's collecting dust in Italy.

Think Laca sale balances out the attack so Edouard signing would be pointless.

Depay, Zaha or Willian would be the more likely Laca replacements.

Hm, or you could replace Lacazette with Edouard with minimal net spend, tie Auba to a new deal, play them together and have Auba's replacement already in place when he leaves in a few years time. Worst case scenario Edouard doesn't fulfil his potential and you can still sell him for a good price.
