Looked 50x more confident and comfortable than Xhaka tonight. Has a more modest range of passing but at the same time he does the simple stuff way better than Xhaka.

Xhaka is a good player at releasing the ball but he is very poor at keeping possession, like quite bad really. Elneny seemed more comfy today in that regard as well as his positioning.

I have a feeling that we are seeing good Elneny performances right now because there are no fans in the stadium to pile pressure on him. He started off his Arsenal career as a solid player but then him being mediocre as well as Arsenal not doing their job and buying better players made the fans scapegoat him.

Its been like a new birth this season. New manager and a clean slate with no fan pressure to give him time to regain confidence and win their respect again. If we had Partey and Aouar (or just 1) signed I would be saying Elneny is fantastic depth to have. It just looks bad right now with the mess in our midfield not being fixed.

I thought he was our best player tonight tbf.

Handled the press alright, broke up play well and managed to get up and down.

Him and Ceballos looked really promising together.
I agree he did quite well in that regard, but Ceballos coming on also showed the major downside in Elneny's play which is cowardly passing. On multiple occasions he did not dare to make a rather simple pass that would've kept forward momentum.

Ceballos was tidy and actually contributed to our transitions forward. I think our best midfield might actually be Ceballos - Elneny - Aouar if Aouar comes in. Or Saka if he doesn't. We need that midfield three.

Lmao at people who think he was good tonight. Genuine fraud in how he cons people by passing it 5 yards sideways into a blind alley and then runs about a lot in a way which doesn’t actually impact anything.
Arsenal fans haven't seen a decent midfielder since Santi, so please give some of them a break.

Another “great” game from Elneny

Who can spot the two forward passes?

Don't think anyone is saying el neny is the next pirlo. Or xavi.

But he does certain thing which are important and more importantly things that xhaka struggles the most at which is keeping the ball under pressure and avoiding the press.

El neny keeps the ball ticking rather than giving it away it does create space for others to make that forward pass. Also the lad has a tonne of stamina. He's our gilberto Silva light, great backup option to when we get aouar and partey.

No need for the hyperbole with Pirlo or Xhaka.

Elneny keeps the ball under pressure sure, but he doesn’t release any of that pressure. He allows it to build and build, palming it off onto somebody else. His pass completion % may look good, but that is just not good midfield play.

I would much rather he gave the ball away more if it meant he also created some opportunities for the team and progressed the ball for us. That 5-2-3 system cannot work if one of your midfield two is never looking to progress the ball to the front 3.

Which is more than what our 'playmaker' did

Simply not true. Xhaka didn’t have a great game, but his pass for Laca’s goal was better than anything Elneny offered on the ball all match.

Indeed, cutting out balls like that is a central part of the reason why Liverpool pressed Xhaka so hard - they never gave him the chance to pick his head up and play the ball forward. No threat of that with Elneny. Could give him the freedom of Anfield and he’d still choose to pass the ball five yards sideways to Bellerin.

Guendouzi is obviously more talented than El Neny but talent alone doesn't really matter. El Neny seems to have the better attitude and is prepared to work his bollocks off, so for me El Neny is ahead of Guendouzi despite the gulf in talent.

100% spot on. What people don't understand about Xhaka is that he is relentlessly pressed and harried because of his ability at passing. What the low IQ retrograde mongoloid then takes from this is that "durrr Xhaka bad at passing", when its actually the opposite.

Also spot on, and why in this system you need a Ceballos alongside a Xhaka against teams like Liverpool, two players who can pass out of pressure gives the entire team more fluidity and press resistance.

El-Neny is the squad player you want in cup competitions and to give breaks to proper CMs in easy home games to keep the squad fresh and reduce injuries

He's a safe pair of uninspiring hands. He's not ever better than good.

That's the only good pass he had that whole game and it's because the ball broke to him. He wasn't finding space to receive the passes. Just hiding and pointing. At least Elneny was trying to take some pressure off us. Xhaka gets praised for his sideways and backwards passes as he's 'dictating' the game but Elneny who isn't supposed to be our creator gets slated for it.
