It is. It's beginning to look like the big business was dependent on getting the £40m they wanted for Guendouzi and a similar fee for Lacazette. Once that didn't happen, they were on the back foot.

And a loan from uncle Stan in this difficult situation was out of the question of course.

Yeah but putting that aside for one minute they still had enough money to buy a good midfielder, someone who’d be better than Xhaka and Elneny. Why didn’t they do that instead of chasing players they can’t afford? You can make the argument that Kroenke should back the manager and get him Partey and Aouar but we’ve come out of this window leaving £40m on the table and haven’t signed a midfielder.

reading the last few pages gives me the distinct impression our season is judged entirely on transfers rather than results

could someone please explain why this is?

Arsenal managed to ostracize and devalue just about every player we planned to sell to raise money for new players. No one is willing to offer a penny for them. Instead players like Niles and Martinez who no one would have touched last season, became 20M plus players. Simply because we gave them a chance and invested in their value by making them part of the team.

We managed to stamp Özil as a worm in the team. Precovid he was as bad and as good as the whole lot. Post covid for some unknown reason Özil is **** but we were wining without him, so he is ****. Yet we hoped other clubs would pick him up and his wages....bizarre ...

Douzi was kicked out of the team for the whole period. Arguably for good reason. However if you have a player with 2 years to run, you think about your investment too. Now we have completely devalued him. No one is offering even a penny. He is ending up at Hertha on deadline day. Comes back next season with a year on his contract. Value finally gone. Free in a year. Yet we were expecting 30M for him. If you expect 30M then protect the investment to keep the value. There was an attitude issue we managed poorly and ended up devaluing the player.

Lucas did not get a kick of the ball. Yet we expect big money for him too.

Then the usual Kola , Papa , Mustaphi , Chambers etc...

How on earth did we hope to raise money for Partey and Aouar from this? We ended up raising funds on players we never planned to sell. Martinez was an opportunity for the club to make money and they used his desire for number one to sell it to us.

Emery was backed more than Arteta. After a cluster **** of a season :lol:

Emery wasn't really backed.

He was inadvertently backed with players he didn't want/ask for, just so Don Raul could spend a lot of money and skim as much of that money back for himself.

@AMModTeam are we going to update the thread title during the day. Some (most?) of us are working and this thread will destroy my productivity if I sit in it all day.

Because we (kind of) know how the season will end with the current squad.
