Arsenal's True Spending Position: There is no top 6

Repeating the same mistakes again with the new regime though. If that list is to be believed, which clubs in the top 10 would give Mari £85k a week or £75k a week to Cedric? That's without even mentioning Willian.

Agree with you but my point merely was that Wenger started this mess.

Depends whether he had true control over transfers. Can’t imagine a world where Xhaka is ever a Wenger player. The StatsDNA debacle was apparently something he wasn’t keen on at the time.

Also he wasn’t the one who extended Chambers, Holding, Elneny and Xhaka. That was done by the following regime.

He’s been gone for three years, we can’t keep blaming him for all the deadwood we still have.

Wenger has been gone close to 3 years now, people can't keep blaming him for everything wrong with the club. Of that list of players you mentioned Xhaka could have been sold to Berlin a year ago, Holding got an extension this year, Elneny was brought back from a loan in Turkey with his agent talking of an extension. I don't see how that can be pinned on Wenger.

He had almost 100% control over transfers. None of those players would have been bought without his approval. Xhaka is in a similar mould to Petit and Edu so yes I can imagine a world where he’d be interested him in.

And he may not have renewed Holding, Elneny or Xhaka but he signed them in the first place and we’re paying the consequences ever since.

You don’t know that definitively though? None of us do unless we were actually there.

Its literally not his fault that in 2021 we’re struggling with Xhaka, Holding, Elneny and Chambers if he didn’t give them the contracts that mean they’re here today though?

No ones pinning it on Wenger. The fact is he started the trend of recruiting average bums and putting them on contracts twice more than they’re worth.

You honestly think the guy who ran the franchise virtually from top to bottom who was pretty much untouchable/unsackable for over 20 years didn’t have the final say on transfers?

He brought those bums and put them on hefty wages though that’s all I’m saying. This irresponsible policy started from him. And it’s not just the players that are still here. The likes of Bendter, Denilson, Eboue, Flamini, Djourou, Jenkinson, Andre Santos, Welbeck, Mustafi etc were all on far more money than they deserved hence why we eventually couldn’t even give most them away.

Well if that is true it's up to whoever is in charge of contracts at the club to stop offering these same deals to either players we currently have or any potential new signings by changing the wage structure. If we don't do that I'm sure people in 10 years time will still be blaming Wenger for some of the poor contracts we have at the club at that time.

Final say is different from actively going out and scouting players.

If some guy told him we couldn’t get Vardy but the analytics said Lucas Perez was just as good then conveniently you can’t blame the faceless data analyst and the criticism all goes on Wenger.

People love to blame him for all the bad transfers but what was Gazidis’ role in all this? The man who actually pushed forward StatsDNAz

I wasn’t laying the blame entirely on Wenger. Gazidis was a useless bastard too. There’s just no denying that this reckless recruitment policy of throwing wages away on substandard players can be traced back to Wenger’s latter days and his socialist structure.

So you're saying Wenger wouldn't view any of the "second on the list" players he was given? He would just say yes, trust those above him and then use the player? Find that very hard to believe. I think Arsène had just as much input as everyone else, maybe even more.

Lucas Perez on the face of it was in the same sort of mould as Vardy, obviously nowhere near as good but I'd understand why the club went for him if they wanted someone who was like Vardy in how they play. However what I don't get is how and why do you sign Perez for the sake of it, for so much money given the level of the footballer? And then go and sign Lacazette and Auba back to back for £110M.

I think you'd struggle to find many people who would've been against not signing Perez at the time and putting that £18M towards a better midfielder for example. But Wenger obviously wanted Vardy/Perez so that's what he got.

Why would I know how it works inside the club?

I’m simply saying you lot act like you’re certain of how things went and who’s to blame when nobody knows unless you were there.

All keep refusing to answer the point that these clowns in charge are the ones who gave all these “sh*te Wenger buys” bumper contracts though conveniently.

I specifically said its a cumulative problem.

So is it Arteta’s and Edu’s fault that they’re paying Mari and Cedric 160k a week combined then?

Also I place more blame with people like Gazidis, Raul and Edu as they’ve seen those Wenger signings weren’t good enough yet they extended them anyway.

"Fault"...?

The only way it'll be a fault/poor decision is if Cedric and Mari get bigger contracts at the end of this one, a small extension is fine for Mari. Is 75k a week high for a backup right back at a top club? That's up for debate. Is 85k a week high for Mari? Yes probably, but the transfer fee was very low so in the grand scheme of things its not overly bad.

Was Holding getting a new contract the correct decision? Yes, due to his age and wages its good to protect his value. I think we can get 15-20M for him from a Newcastle for example.
