Useless International matches

Unsurprising. Poorer federations will be all in because World Cup qualifiers generate the bulk of their income.

Part of the World Cup's charm is that there are long intervals between each tournament. It's a very generational thing, one player doesn't get to play in too many of them. 2-year tournaments would ruin it.

They're not gonna stop until there's a football match every day of the year. Football is a seasonal sport, not a tv show!

Benzema coming out of nowhere, to save football from Giroud breaking Henry's record...not all heroes wear capes...some just blackmail their teammates!

Portugal have also announced their final squad:

GK - Rui Patrício, Anthony Lopes, Rui Silva
DF - João Cancelo, Nélson Semedo, Rúben Dias, José Fonte, Pepe, Raphaël Guerreiro, Nuno Mendes
MF - Danilo Pereira, William Carvalho, João Palhinha, Rúben Neves, João Moutinho, Sérgio Oliveira, Renato Sanches, Bruno Fernandes
FW - Cristiano Ronaldo, Bernardo Silva, João Félix, Diogo Jota, Gonçalo Guedes, André Silva, Rafa Silva, Pedro Gonçalves

Absolutely loaded.

State of football is pretty low if managers need to get retired players to play in big competitions.

You mean the German guys? They didn't retire from the NT on their own accord but were retired by Löw as scapegoats for the bad WC so he could do a rebuild - look how successfull that was. Imo he should've even taken Boateng who's had a better season than e.g. Süle. Hummels was one of the league's best CBs and Dortmund's best player despite having lost pace, Müller is on a ridiculous 15 goals + 24 assists in 45 games. Absolute no brainers. If you're not Löw you probably take Max Kruse who's allround game is probably closest to Klose of all current German forwards, leave Kroos the **** at home but take Maxi Arnold. You also take Ridle Baku instead of Musiala which has been a ridiculous choice.

Kruse
Werner Müller Gnabry
Kimmich Gündogan
Gosens Hummels Rüdiger Baku
Neuer

Poor squad imo.

Yep. Nowhere near the overall quality as well as the individual quality of Schweinsteiger, Özil, Klose, Lahm, Khedira, Boateng as well as Hummels, Müller and Neuer in their prime, although all three have had comparatively good seasons to recent ones.

Gosens has been fantastic, but as more of a wingback, right? Maybe they could play a back 3?

Also the players really need to unionise somehow. These decisions get made over their head by people who've never put on a pair of football boots. A world cup every two years? There'd probably be a euros every two years. Three european club competitions, Fifa want a new global club competition, expanded Champions League, winter world cup in Qatar. It's ridiculous. The football schedule is broken.

Like they get paid huge amounts and they're very privileged, but a lot of them lead miserable lives. We watch a sport now where you turn on your telly and you see a pundit like Souness comment on a game, or even guys like Jamie Redknapp from the 90's. It's almost a different sport now to the one they played. The guys now can't even have one pint at the weekend. Their lives are so sterile, so isolated.

Gundogan was talking recently about this, saying even before the pandemic he was unhappy and lonely a lot of the time.

If the players unionised they'd have enough collective power to change things. They have way more power than the fans, that's for sure. Right now TV is winning, and the sport is losing. It's gotta stop.
