You're spot on @Barry . Conversion rates always are lower with bigger samples of shots, even Ronaldo and Messi's.

When people talk about people like Sterling being 'wasteful' they are missing a bit the point. The more important skill is getting into those positions through as you say their skill, movement, and anticipations. Messi, Ronaldo, Lewandowski, all the great goal scorers of the history, are not that because they have significantly better conversion rates with the rest...they combine upper level conversion rates--without being statistically that significant the difference--with being most of all very good at getting into interesting shooting positions with their ability.

So yeah, Sterling doesn't have the higher range conversion rate nor has he ever nor will he ever, but it's really the most uninteresting and insignificant part of the question of rather a player is good or not. And especially high conversion rates, outside of the range of normal levels which not even Messi, Ronaldo, or Lewndowski get to, tend to actually suggest players who are worse than the stats suggest they are and are getting a bit lucky of fluky (like Willock in his goal scoring run with Newcastle last season).
It's not rocket science. The likes of sterling, Greenwood and Foden plays for teams that creates huge volume of chances which means that their misses no matter how bad it is not as highlighted as that if Saka and ESR. If Sterling had missed similar chances to ESR's miss in the BHA game, no one would care tbh.

ESR and Saka play for a team that chances at a premium. One miss can send the whole of A-M into a meltdown.

If ESR plays for city, will he be a worse finisher than, say, Foden?

Maybe

You're wrong, no?

It's not only a problem for ESR and Saka, every one of our forwards gets the same. We basically can't win the ball quickly enough, as soon as we lose it we park the bus and end up defending for the next 5 minutes. Once we win the ball, there is a high chance Tierney will hoof it or one of Ode or Partey will gift it for nothing. There is no way our forwards will get enough of the ball to do anything, and that's why they are always getting most of the criticism even though our forward line is the strongest part of this team.

It's all about xG. Your tactics and the way the whole team plays is what leads to the chances the forwards will get. Those chances have to be frequent and close to goal, then you'll win games. It really isn't rocket science. Most of the teams in the league would love forwards of the calibre of Auba, Laca, Pepe, Saka. Arteta is ruining them.

ESR is starting U21 match against Slovenia in a half an hour.

Balogun and John-Jules on the bench.

How was he?
I have no idea, didn't watch it. The match ended in 2-2 after 0-2 for England.

ESR played the whole match, and Balogun & John-Jules were both substituted in at 70 minutes.

So I assume ESR was pretty good as he was the only attacker not subbed out, and he didn't score like the others.
