Drama in the AM-stel Arena… the power has gone out at half time!

The two teams are huddled in the tunnel but there’s no light and they’re sent back to the dressing room. For what feels like months they're stood around waiting to resume the game.

Eventually though, back on come the lights and the players are back and ready to mix it for one last time on the pitch…

Drake and his assistants @Juan Matas Beard and @Gooner416 are trailing 2-1 at the half and they’ve already felt like they need to change it up…

And after he was unceremoniously substituted early in the only CL final he ever played it’s a chance at redemption for Robert Pires who’s coming on for Hummels.

Looks like Ronaldo is moving up front…

With a tweak in formation it’s the Spartans who are taking it to AGFC early on.

Gerrard and Makelele hound Abedi Pele who dwells on the ball and coughs it up…

Casemiro sweeps it out wide to Ronaldo who has De Boer in a 2 on 1 situation with Pires making an overlapping run down the left.

Caught in no man’s land a retreating De Boer sees Ronaldo fake left but as he cuts right he loses his balance…

Ronaldo puts his head up… raises the hammer…

Flying tackle from Godin… who is fooled by the dummy…

Smashed by Ronaldo from the edge of the penalty area…

AND

1711012758178.jpeg

He lasers it past Kahn at the near post… he put his foot through it but the accuracy was unbelievable.

Kahn didn’t think he would go near and it was past him in a flash!

ALL SQUARE IN THE FINAL AT 2-2 WITH 40 MINUTES LEFT TO PLAY!

There’s more bad news for @A_G as Fabinho is down in a heap on the pitch… looks like he’s pulled his hamstring and a vital cog in midfield and whisper it, a penalty taker is having to come off…

Less than 10 minutes later and things are going from bad to worse for AGFC!

Drogba goes up for a header with Puyol who absolutely clatters him. The Drog who’s been as important as Messi in getting to this final is out cold and a huge game player plus another penalty taker is gone.

So the ultimate dream team CL final now has both David Albelda and Mauro Icardi on the pitch but that’s tournament football.

Wanda Nara suddenly sits up from Sauce Squad co-manager @Trilly ’s lap in the crowd to applaud her husband!

Meanwhile on the pitch it looks AGelotti is moving more defensive with two of his star men off the pitch. He’s looking to play on the counter through Messi and Vinicius.

Problem is that’s exactly what the Spartans are doing as well and the quality of the game breaks down. Both teams look afraid of making a mistake and losing the final.

The Spartans and AGFC ring more changes as we creep into the final minutes… Kluivert and hatchet man Pepe come in for the Spartans while @A_G gambles and makes his final change.

Abedi Pele is out on his feet but to the shock of everyone watching it’s not Rui Costa but Pablo Aimar coming in!!

Curve ball here as Messi and his childhood idol now have the chance to win the final together.

Into injury time and it’s a rampaging Kaka who’s trying to win the game…

Rides a tackle from the substitute Albelda and carries the ball right to the box…

He shapes to shoot…

BUT SLIDE RULES IT TO RONALDO!

He stares down Kahn and…

What a save from the German!!!

RONALDO CAN’T BELIEVE IT!

Kahn somehow gets a boot out and keeps AGFC alive…

The final whistle goes… and we’re going to EXTRA TIME!

So onto extra time we go…

Both sides have made all their substitutions so the teams we have are the teams we’ll finish with.

Both teams are looking like prizefighters who’ve gone 12 rounds and there’s not a lot of runs being made out there…

In fact the game is turning into a bit of a bad tempered scrap. After a cynical ankle tap from habitual line crosser Pepe on Messi a mini shoving match breaks out.

There’s now four Argentinians on the pitch and it’s Zanetti who gets his name taken for his heated argument with Pepe who somehow avoids a booking himself.

Towards the end of the first half of extra time Casemiro forces a turnover…

Gets the ball to Kaka who beats a man and whips into space where Pires is through!!!

He sees Ronaldo along side and Pires… IS HAULED DOWN BY GODIN!!

Surely he was the last man…

WOW the Spartans are NOT happy with that!!

Surely that has to be a red… a huge protest is going on now as Gerrard and the boys are surrounding the referee who waves them all away…

He’s not interested in VAR and the half draws to a controversial end!

Still 2-2 in the final…

One last push from both teams here to try and avoid the shootout.

AGFC have been very poor in the second half with both the injuries completely derailing their impressive first half momentum.

Meanwhile on the other bench Drake shouts out encouragement to his team… his assistants look on totally reductive in their roles.

@Juan Matas Beard looks shell shocked as he sees the Six God give Captain Fantastic Steven Gerrard a big hug and bum pat for encouragement as half time ends.

The game is fully being played at a meander now… each team is very clearly seeing the ignominy of losing a final in extra time and is happy taking their chance in the shootout.

In fact both teams are being reduced to potshots from distance… which Ronaldo and Gerrard are more than happy to settle for.

The two frenemies take it in turns spooning shots over the bar and giving presents to the fans in attendance.

As we crawl towards penalties there is time for one last attack…

And it’s AGFC looking to capitalise on a loose pass from Puyol…

Vinicius carries it aggressively into space and slips past Pepe…

Up to the area he feints left…

But cuts it back across the area…

Here he is…

MESSI ARRIVING

IMG_7529.jpeg

The maestro Messi clips it first time through a crowd of legs and it was past Schmeichel almost before he could see it!

He’s won it at the death!

BUT WAIT!!

The Spartans are surrounding the referee! What is the problem?

VAR are getting involved…

The crowd strain their necks to look at a screen…

And… OH NO!!!

Icardi is a foot offside right in Schmeichel’s eyeline! This is getting waved off…

Messi looks totally dejected!

1711016838883.jpeg

Wanda Nara has disappeared from view in the crowd, maybe related to her husband’s shame…

But @Trilly has his head back and looks he’s enjoying something very much in his seat…

Meanwhile VAR flashes red with no goal and we’re going to penalties!!

Right then…

Messi and his team almost have no time to pick themselves up after winning it all before they’re being gathered round by @A_G to talk about the order of the shootout

1711017135528.jpeg

On the other side Drake is in furious discussions with Gerrard and Ronaldo about who goes first for them…

The rest of the team stands chatting to @Juan Matas Beard and @Gooner416 as the glory hunters hash it out.

Captains Zanetti and Gerrard eventually make their way to the ref for the coin toss…

And AGFC will take first!

Putting his heartbreak behind him it’s the star man Messi looking to set the standard…

Gutsy call this from the Argentine…

Up he steps and…

So where there is one the other must follow…

After seeing Messi of course Ronaldo is up next!

Takes a deep breath… runs up confidently…

1711017772484.jpeg

SAVEDDDDDD!

Good height for Kahn and the German pushes it away!

1-0 still to AGFC!

Ronaldo can’t believe it he looks absolutely heartbroken…

Already with Fabinho and Drogba gone there’s a fall off in the quality of penalty takers for AGFC…

And next it’s Messi’s hero Aimar a man who only took two penalties in his entire career…

Schmeichel looks confident here…

1711018293279.jpeg

And he pushes the diminutive Argentine’s shot wide!

Still only 1-0 to AGFC!

Next up is Bobby Pires…

No Thierry Henry to distract him from taking a penalty this time…

IMG_7531.jpeg

And of course the Arsenal legend whips it home!

1-1 now both teams equal after two!

Arsenal Quotes

I still have an interest in training and development, in the stages that make it possible for players first to acquire technique (between 7 and 12) and then to develop physically (between 12 and 16), then to deepen their mental resilience (between 17 and 19) and finally between 19 and 22 to acquire what is critical, like the roof of a house without which all the rest rots away: intelligence and motivation
