Arsène Wenger: Same Old Class

I think the question will be how poor is poor enough in the board's view. If we do finish outside the top 4 this season, as is looking likely, will Kroenke & co. see it as an anomaly or a sign of the team going backwards? Do they feel that Wenger's overall achievements would merit giving him a chance to get us back into top 4 and Europe's premier club competition?

I don't think that Kroenke guy understands football. When old sly Wenger told him we got 4th spot and its a trophy, he probably believed it. That's how Wenger kept his job for so long.

STATEMENT: Black Scarf Movement says no new contract for Arsène Wenger:
For some time, we have been deeply concerned with the direction of Arsenal Football Club.

Since Arsène Wenger's last contract extension (one which many fans objected to), the club's board has had three years to plan for the future. Instead, a new deal and a reported £2m per year pay rise is on the table for the manager to sign, despite his team consistently failing to challenge for major honours. There appears to be no management of the manager from the board, and they are more than happy for him to sign up once again.

It is our opinion that this is lazy, and shows a clear lack of football knowledge / ambition from the Arsenal board.

The atmosphere among our matchgoing support is on the floor. Protests against the manager's contract extension continue to increase. Added to this, physical violence among fans is taking place.

Back in 2011, Ivan Gazidis had this to say when questioned about Wenger's future:

"Arsène is accountable to the fans - they ultimately make judgement. If you are seeing the relationship between the fans and the manager break down over time, that is unsustainable"

In the six years since that statement we are no closer to challenging for the Premier League or Champions League, and the relationship between the fans and the manager is at an all time low. Fighting among fans (over the manager) is by far the biggest indication that the relationship is broken, and the trouble will only increase the longer Arsène Wenger remains at the club.

We feel it's irresponsible of the board to ignore these issues, and blatantly ignore the statement previously made by the club's Chief Executive.

As for Arsène Wenger, there appears to be an ongoing reluctance from him to adapt to the modern game. In fact, despite sizeable investment in transfers over the past few years we are now in a worse position than we've been for over 20 years, and repeated humiliations at the hands of our so-called rivals continue to take place. No other big club in football would tolerate the stream of embarrassing results we've had to endure. While the players have to take some responsibility, it is one man who has bought these players, who trains them, whose job is to motivate them and get the best out of them. He is continually failing to do this.

It is our view that there should have been no contract extension on offer to Arsène Wenger, unless he managed to deliver either of the two biggest trophies available this season. Instead, we are clearly in decline on the pitch and there is no sign of improvement or willingness from the manager to change his ways.

Some comments have been circulated that the manager deserves a 'final swan song'. This should have been the cup final in 2014, and there should have been no three year extension. We have gone backwards since then, so why continue on the same track? Because the manager was a success more than ten years ago? After another two years of failure, what's to say the board won't offer him another two years? It's seemingly a never-ending cycle where the board continually shirks responsibility, the manager just keeps going, keeps picking up a mammoth salary, top players become disillusioned and leave, and the club continues to drift.

Arsenal fans are constantly told that Arsène Wenger loves Arsenal. If this is the case, we hope that he realises that he has taken the club as far as he can, and steps down at the end of this season.

Should the manager remain, his legacy will continue to be tarnished. We are informed the protests against him will continue, and will become increasingly vociferous. Until a change takes place, the atmosphere in our support will become more toxic. Something needs to be done.

It really is time for change. Time for a fresh approach, and time for fans to unite under a new manager.

Well that stuff about Celtic is a massive stretch, if we're being honest they were comfortably in the shadow of Rangers as they often have been in the 21st Centur

You can't be serious here? Strictly speaking Rangers does not even exist anymore. A club so rottenly run that it went into receivership. Spending money on buying players they could not afford.

Rangers, the club that was so badly run, that it made Leeds seem a paragon of corporate virtue. With a chairman that was banned from holding corporate roles for 15 years etc etc.

A vile, vile club.

Anyone listen to Footballistically Arsenal podcast? Josh Landy has got to be even more stubborn than Wenger. Just dismisses anyone who wants Wenger gone and offers zero arguments for why he should remain. Drives me mad.
One thing this situation has highlighted is that for many fans this has nothing to do with football. Sentiment, nostalgia and fear of the unknown can make fools of people. Add a bit of stubbornness and a penchant for grabbing moral high ground, and they need saving from themselves

He's being offered £2m a year MORE?!!!

And some are up in arms at the prospect of the progressive Ox being given a rise if he signs on...

Well, I remember reading that Wenger believes no player should get paid more than the manager ( ).

He's obviously accepting a rise if he stays on. What a beacon of morality this man is.
Think in the view of the board a pay rise is in order. The money keeps rolling in and of course Wenger should have part of that cake. As fans we feel very much different, but in the view of Kroenke we are just customers. If he can suck a sufficient amount of money out of us compared to the invested capital all is well. Unfortunately I feel Wenger shares this view now.

Seriously there's seems to be a dark side to this guy. I can imagine him sitting at home in his arm chairs reading all the criticism and sniggering away how to piss everyone off.

If only us ordinary employees were retained and given pay rises even after doing crap work.

What does Wenger even do with the money? I mean he's almost 70 and he probably has millions sitting in the bank.

On the other hand
Arsenal players will reportedly lose millions of pounds worth of bonuses and could face potential pay cuts should they fail to qualify for next season's UEFA Champions League.

How many managers have ever turned down a new contract because they feel they are not performing enough to deserve it?

11 league trophies in the 21St century. 6 out of 10 from 2000 - 2010. No shadow mate. Anyway. You're missing the point. Its about looking at players who play in a style or situation similar to our own. High possession. Pressure. Kicked off the ball. Conceding few chances so high concentration required. I'm not daft to think that any team at a lower level who play in those types of conditions will be able to step up. You need to find the diamonds, the guys who are so comfortable it's clear they have more to give.

We can do stats. Personally I don't think forward passing is a big issue for us and sounds to me like it's just a stick to beat Wanyama with. Originally it was he can't pass the ball. Which he clearly can. Stats prove that. Now two important stats. Goals for and against. Sp**s have lost 21 goals the same as Chelsea. Now in my eyes those teams have defensive minded players in Kante, Wanyama we have lost 34 only Liverpool have conceded more. We also have the third highest number of goals scored. Our issue isn't getting the ball forward it's keeping it out of our own net.

Its a pointless discussion anyway. I'm not going to give an inch. We'd be a much better team with Wanyama in there than any of our other allegedly defensive minded players. We missed the opportunity.

Yeah but forward passes do matter if you're including passing % which you did, it's why most CB's have among the highest pass percentages, it's all because of the risk involved.

If he's passing almost exclusively sideways for 90 minutes then it's going to skew the figures. I mean Coquelin passes forwards more per game and has a higher completion percentage and no one would argue that he can pass the ball.

By the same token it seems you may be twisting stats to suit him, as for the goals conceded argument Sp**s have indeed conceded 21 goals this year. But last year at the same stage after 28 games played when Wanyama wasn't even playing for them, they'd only conceded 22 goals so how much of their stinginess is down to Wanyama and how much is down to Pochettino?

I would say both are a huge factor. Pochettino has his way of playing and with CL football in the bag increasing the profile of the club and the pool of players available to him he still went back for a player he managed previously to fill what he viewed as a whole in the squad. Wanyama has done that job. They've conceded less goals while juggling CL football for the first time in a long time. Our own manager has said how difficult that can be yet Sp**s are sitting second in the league and we only went two games further than them.

To keep this somewhat on track Wenger has been signing the wrong players for a while now. Players we have signed have no role in how we play, they have strong qualities but they dont fit our system or what we need to go forward.

Take it with pinch of salt, maybe someone is on a wind up:
Today is full of this kind of rumors. Apparently Gazidis is set to leave, he doesn't see eye to eye with Kroenke
