They are called Referees

Are you for VAR or not?

Theres always going to be a human element though (someone has to watch the video). And people always make mistakes. We need robot referees.

@hydrofluoric acid is right to some extent. There can still be a debate about some things - should a player have got a second yellow card there, was there a foul in the previous phase - but in this instance he is offside.

Offside can get complicated, but this wasn’t, and they failed to use it properly.

(I don’t think he dived, I dislike Kane as much as many, but he was anticipating getting the clattering he got.)

VAR is better than no VAR. But it won’t stop controversy because the rules have been tinkered with and muddled up over too many years.

The offside rule is crazy, different phases of play and decisions about not interfering . . . too complex.

Handball, obstruction, diving . . . all very difficult to decide, even in slow motion and a panel of judges.

100% agree. VAR is nice and all, but in the end it's still humans interpreting and applying the rules. Anywhere it has been implemented VAR has clearly pointed towards muddled, inconclusive and imprecise rules leading to human error on the grounds of differing interpretations and applications of said rules being the main problem of refereeing.

Another big problem is that either you use VAR to review all decisions and situations, including small tactical fouls, any offsides etc. and rewrite rules to fit this - or you shouldn't use it at all. The way that VAR has been used in "big decisions" is bollocks: any decision/situation can be a game changer. Wrongly given cards or freekicks that have lead to teams scoring should be consistently and continually reviewed as well. The game doesn't get any fairer if you just screen the box. You have to screen and review every little thing, even if it means less power for the on field ref, or VAR's use of making the game more fair equals a hot fart.

Bad week for VAR.. The Real and Fiorentina penalties were laughable decisions.. Doesn't help if the refs are still incompetent.

Even the Morata goal should have stood imo, everything looks worse in slow-mo..

There's not really a good argument against it. People used to say it would interfere with the flow of the game, but I never bought that because arguments after controversial calls or goal celebrations (and getting play started again) generally take up about as much time as VAR decisions. Of course no system is perfect and humans will even make mistakes watching replays, but if you can get bad calls on goals, penalty kicks or red card decisions right 9 times out of 10 or more then it's well worth it. And the longer the system is used, the more kinks get worked out and the more smoothly it will go.

Without a doubt there would have been a different outcome today had VAR been in effect.

2 disallowed goals against Newcastle. The second one was ridiculous!

The GK almost gave Laca a haircut, but the referee somehow though that Laca had handled the ball.

How on earth is mike Riley head of referees in this country?! Actually, thinking about it he was fergies boy back in the dark days so it's no wonder he got friends in high places. Just watching his performance at OT to end the unbeaten run tells you all you need to know about him. Hope The Dean takes over when he hangs up the whistle.

So with this VAR just to clear things up Can a referees decision be overturned for instance

  • A player goes down in the box referee waves it away as no foul/no penalty can then this be investigated by the Video team and they tell the ref he has to give the penalty because a foul has taken place

Or has the referee got to request it gets looked at or he wants to see for himself. Would the above also apply for offsides too.?

Only person that can ask for a review or have the final say is the ref, others can only recommend.

Technically, from what I know of the rules, a ref could decline all reviews and just go with their instinct throughout.
