I'm surprised you've got Tierney down as backup. Doubt the club puts £25m into a LB and have him do that. They bed him in slowly because of injuries but make no bones about it this guy will be our starter once he up and running.

The problem we have is a distinct lack of wide attacking options, which will force Aubameyang wide. It has to be a 4-3-3 with him on the left, otherwise I would have loved to see a 4-4-2, with Laca and Aubameyang up front if only we had a proper left winger.

4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 for me.

4-2-3-1;
Leno
Bellerin Sokratis Luiz Tierney
Torreira Ceballos
Nelson Özil Pepe
Aubameyang

4-3-3;
Leno
Bellerin Sokratis Luiz Tierney
Xhaka
Torreira Ceballos
Auba Laca Pepe

Keeps us ticking
Defensive liability, especially on the counter. Needs another midfielder to protect him, which makes us less effective when pressing high. His defensive weaknesses are there fall all to see, and makes us vulnerable to exploits if we want to press high. The fact we don't have a good defensive anchor in midfield, means we are much more vulnerable to counter attacks if we are to push the other midfielders up the pitch to join in attack or to press high in transition stages. Players like Fernandinho, Fabinho, Kanté do this job in other top teams. And who do we have? Bloody Xhaka. I know Xhaka is a defensive playmaker, and those I mention are not, but Xhaka is the most defensive player we have, the one who holds back while the other attack or press high. And he sucks at it. Torreira is imo the player we have who's best suited to sit the deepest in our midfield and protect the defense. Xhaka is not suited for a high pressing midfield role, and should be second choice to Torreira until we sell him.

I want to see this:
Leno
Bellerin - Sokratis - Luiz - Tierney
Willock - Torreira - Ceballos
Pepe - Laca - Aubameyang

Willock deserves a chance in the team.

I think people can be very naive when they go on the strength of the squad based on a preferred starting 11 because it will be extremely rare, if ever, we have the supposed best starting 11 to choose from due to injuries.

At this point 58 votes and not one single vote for 3 at the back, I hope Unai is watching this thread!

I voted 4-3-3 but would also be happy with 4-2-3-1 against weaker opposition.

In the end with everyone fit I want a 4-3-3.

Leno

Bellerin Sokratis Luiz Tierney

Ceballos Torreira Xhaka

Pepe Lacazette Auba

For now I’d consider playing a 3-5-2 because Bellerin, Tierney, Pepe likely aren’t ready.

Leno

Sokratis Luiz Monreal

AMN Ceballos Torreira Xhaka Kolasinac

Lacazette Aubameyang

Swap out Ceballos for Özil or play Özil in the front 2 or 3 when it’s needed.

Terrible hot takes
Slow and steady wins the race.

Do not risk overplaying Willock, if we do he will just be another in a long line of injured, stagnated etc players

Only Cesc have survived being thrown in the deep end!

And from the looks of Willock he seems to be a great option as an impact player

First sub/rotation for all 3 midfield positions for me, he benches Guendozi imo

Against weaker sides a Dani, Xhaka, Willock midfield is good to.

Think we looked way better in the second game playing more 433!

If Emery has any sense the only thing that changes is the pecking order with Willock over Guendozi att this point

Xhaka

Guendozi

I hate the 3 at the back, I really do, but I'd consider it an option just for the Liverpool game.

Until we've got a defensive line with Tierney and possibily Bellerin as well (AMN isn't doing bad right now though), I can only see us being overrun on the flanks with Salah and Mane.

So it's either a 4-3-3 with focus on a defensive midfield like Willock-Torreira-Ceballos or the much hated 3-5-2 for that particular game.

For any other game stick to 4-3-3, we just need more time to improve the new side which will come naturally.
