Really things began deteriorating when Berlusconi decided to focus his efforts on politics and diddling teenage girls rather than paying much attention to the club. Of course a lot of things converged there. It was also about the same time that FFP came into play, so Milan could no longer rely on Silvio's "gifts" of big players to the club. They won a Scudetto in 2011, finished 2nd the following year, sold Zlatan and quickly dropped off the face of the Earth. So basically this is their 7th year in the wilderness, but there was a chipping away before that.
